Death of Anna von Schweidnitz: The Empress Who United Europeâs Royal Courts
On July 11, 1362, Anna von Schweidnitz became the first and only woman from the Silesian Piast dynasty to be crowned Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. Born into the ruling family of Ĺwidnica (Schweidnitz), she married Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and became one of the most influential queens of medieval Europe. Her marriage strengthened Charles IVâs ties to Central European territories and helped secure the future of the Luxembourg dynasty.
Anna was celebrated for her intelligence, dignity, and role at the imperial court in Prague. As Queen of Bohemia and later Empress, she supported the cultural and political ambitions of her husband during one of the most important periods of the medieval empire. Her early death in 1362 at the age of 23 ended a promising life, but her legacy remained connected to the rise of the Luxembourg rulers and the history of medieval Europe.
Charles IV Elected King of the Romans
On July 11, 1346, Charles IV, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, was elected King of the Romans, marking the beginning of one of the most influential reigns in the history of the Holy Roman Empire. Backed by several prince-electors and supported by Pope Clement VI, Charles was chosen as a rival to the reigning emperor, Louis IV, during a period of political division. His election laid the foundation for his eventual coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 1355.
Charles IV would go on to become one of the empire's greatest rulers, strengthening imperial authority through diplomacy rather than constant warfare. He is best remembered for issuing the Golden Bull of 1356, which established the rules for electing future emperors and shaped the governance of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. His reign also transformed Prague into a thriving political and cultural center of medieval Europe.

Charles IV Lays the Foundation for Prague's Iconic Charles Bridge
On July 9, 1357, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor personally attended the laying of the foundation stone for what would become the magnificent Charles Bridge in Prague. According to tradition, the ceremony was carefully timed to begin at 5:31 a.m., creating the symbolic numerical sequence 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1, believed to bring strength and good fortune to the bridge. Built to replace the older Judith Bridge, which had been destroyed by flooding, the new stone crossing would become a vital link across the Vltava River.
More than 650 years later, Charles Bridge remains one of Europe's most recognizable medieval landmarks. Lined with impressive Baroque statues and offering breathtaking views of Prague Castle, it has witnessed royal processions, battles, and centuries of history. Thanks to Charles IV's vision, the bridge continues to connect not only the two sides of Prague but also millions of visitors with the city's remarkable past.
Marriage of Joan of Ăvreux and King Charles IV of France (1324)
On July 5, 1324, Charles IV of France married Joan of Ăvreux, strengthening the Capetian dynasty during a period of political consolidation in medieval France. Joan, a member of a cadet branch of the royal family, brought additional prestige and internal stability to Charlesâs reign at a time when royal authority was often challenged by regional nobles and external pressures.
As queen consort, Joan of Ăvreux played an important ceremonial and dynastic role, though her marriage produced only daughters, contributing to the succession crisis that would follow Charles IVâs death in 1328. His passing marked the end of the direct Capetian male line and helped trigger the dynastic tensions that eventually led into the Hundred Yearsâ War between France and England.
June 30, 1364 â Death of ArnoĹĄt of Pardubice, First Archbishop of Prague
On June 30, 1364, ArnoĹĄt of Pardubice died at the age of 67, marking the end of a pivotal career in the early development of the Bohemian Church. As the first Archbishop of Prague, appointed in 1344, he played a foundational role in establishing an independent ecclesiastical structure in Bohemia, elevating Pragueâs religious status within the Holy Roman Empire.
A close advisor to Emperor Charles IV, ArnoĹĄt was deeply involved in shaping both the spiritual and political direction of the kingdom. He supported Charles IVâs vision of Prague as a cultural and religious center, including backing major reforms and the founding of Charles University in 1348.
His leadership helped define the early identity of the Archbishopric of Prague, blending imperial policy with church authority during a transformative era in Central European history.
