the eames chair has a two-person origin story and most people only know half of it
Charles Eames trained as an architect. Ray Eames trained as a painter. They met at design school in 1940, got married the next year, and spent the rest of their lives building furniture, films, and even a house together in Los Angeles.
that famous lounge chair from 1956? that came from both of them. Ray shaped the curves, the colour, the finish. Charles said flat out that she was "equally responsible with me for everything." history just didn't always give her the credit.
and here's the detail that gets us every time - Charles died on 21 August 1978. Ray died on 21 August 1988. same date. ten years apart.
