You know what would be cool? Shows that stop featuring one main white person and then their parter happens to be a person of color or they’re biracial. Can we just have shows where people aren’t hinged from whiteness or exist in a sea of whiteness unless there’s actual context for it (such as the population of an area being predominantly white)? I am currently writing a book where two of the main characters are biracial (half Black, half white) and that decision was thoughtful and based on several factors (personal, bc I grew up in a white AF town with my adopted siblings who were also half Black, half white, and geographically, bc there was such a small portion of people of color in my town, and many midwestern towns, to begin with). Even within the book and the series I’m working on as a whole, this is analyzed throughout the entire story through the perspective of these two characters. I’m white and I get sick of seeing whiteness in media as the focal point of a story without any care or cultural context for the “diversity decisions” that are made throughout the work. It needs to change, permanently. And having trans main characters could be cool, too.
