And I cannot help but think of Black Cat Chloe being so self destructive and it creating a better universe in the ashes.

How it could also be the explanation for the “wish”.

Turning self destruction - mutual destruction even - into an act of self creation, of remaking. Chloe’s destruction causing others or one to look closer and see her for the first time, to see the scars and the rage for what it is. That the thorns are a defense, her armor and weapon both, and becomes determined to reach out to help despite the wounds she will inevitably give them.

Or maybe they too relish in it, this reckless drive that could be truly punk and cool. In the way it’s supposed to be where one stands up against abuses of power, tears down systems and the way things are, and helps or inspires others to stand for themselves (which is much less likely but still a possibility) where Chloe is only trying to destroy this person maybe interprets it as something else, prescribes it a meaning beyond base destruction. Ha I’m rambling.

I mean CGBiT Chloé definitely has a bit of that vibe. She's going to (frustratingly) shine and inspire some of the heroes, by virtue of her sheer determination. She ends up pushing her limits, which pushes others to push THEIR limits. t's all in the service of an internal rage that never goes away because it burns to mask pain. If the fire goes out the pain can be seen, and it must never be seen or felt.

She randomly just talks at some moments, guiding you the whole time yet at a distance. It's so good.

My dad had also read at least the first book, and I think he had read aloud parts of the second to me or my siblings, and even though no where in any description does it say that Hermione wears glasses, because in the first two books especially, she fit the “geeky” archetype so precisely, the characterisation had caused my dad to picture her with glasses.

As an adult I am self aware enough to realise that I must do this too with various characters I read about although none come to mind immediately, but also I think I would find it a bit upsetting to discover that I had imagined a character I loved “wrong”. By wrong here I specifically mean a distinct difference to how they’re described in the book, not looking different from whichever actor they cast to play them in an adaptation.

For years in my narrative writing, which is mostly fanfiction, I go out of my way to avoid describing the way a character looks because I think in terms of characters that is rarely the most important thing. I will often describe who they are or what they’re wearing, but not their physical appearance, because for me when I’m reading, a physical description of the character is pretty superfluous. Instead I will write things like:

“Elena strode into the office, sharp and focused despite this being her day off. There was no space for nonsense, and she held the respect and fear of her colleagues that nobody blinked twice at the combat boots, floaty maxi dress with mud clinging to the hem, or the presence of her sleeping two year old in the pushchair. Elena kept her voice soft and mellifluous while she asked pointed questions to get to the heart of the matter to preserve her daughter’s sleep, but her words carried the same impact as if she had said them loudly and sharply to carry across a conference room.”

No where do I mention Elena’s height, weight, facial features, hair colour or race, but I don’t feel like the introduction of the character is lacking for them. I think I’ve given a clear first impression, and it allows the reader to fill in the gaps with their imagination using what makes sense to them.
