So I couldn't decided today between a scene from Chapter 5 of Changing Tides or a snippet of a Theomar piece I'm working on for the Gala but then remembered porque no los dos? Both under the cut for length, first up is Odile encountering someone with far from wholesome intentions:
It’s while she’s here, face shifting from smiling to a look of mourn over her supper, does someone speak to her, seemingly concerned.Â
“And what has you down, darling?” When Odile looks up from the bits of white fish and carrots swimming amidst the cream broth, she isn’t expecting to see what she does. Not expecting to see the tall figure leaning against the wall of the Inn, the gold thread of his purple coat glimmering under the light. Now closer to her, she can see they look enchanted as well as expensive, whatever fabric it is made of is one which she’s never seen. Likely something fancy and foreign, fitting in that he is an Altmer. Golden hair to his shoulders, skin like that of brass and piercing amber eyes.Â
“Oh nothing, I’m doing fine.” A drought of self-confidence hits her and she wants nothing more than to sink into the floorboards. The navy robe she wore for the journey was frayed, patches in the elbows to cover up the wear; it had been her mother’s before her. Procured at a stall in Chorrol when she first came to Cyrodiil. It covers up my pants at least, she thinks. Even more worse for wear as they were the ones she wore for chores around the house. While packing in the early morning, it didn’t occur to her to dress well. Though all of her clothes showed visible mending, there were some better than others. A green dress she sewed with fabric they traded for, a few linen tops she embroidered herself; items far better than those she brought. No point in worrying about that now.
It would seem her answer is not convincing when the mysterious stranger, the second mysterious Elven stranger she’s come across, tells her so.Â
“You certainly do not look, nor sound, okay.” Pulling the barstool out, he flags down the Innkeeper.Â
“Red or white?” He asks her.Â
“Oh I don’t have the money… at the moment.” Offering the latter half to divert away, never feeling embarrassed for her modest living until faced with the exact opposite.Â
“Well, I do. Red or white?” Odile smiles, heat rising to her cheeks at his words.Â
“White, they are sweeter.”Â
“That they are.”
And next is Theodora thinking about what to do for the Gala with her loser mer husband of 9 years yearning <3
Whereas choosing who to embody had been easy for him, albeit not a unique choice by the sea of pointed crowns around him, Theodora hadn’t been so sure as to what she wanted to wear.Â
“Should I dress as Akatosh? That feels the most fitting, that’s probably what is expected of me.”Â
“But you embody the dragon every day, my love.” Gently his hands stroked her shoulders while she stood in front of the mirror. “Though if that’s what you want, it is not possible for you to be anything less than stunning.” The smile he catches in the mirror is perfect, so wide and genuine, nothing compared to the feeling of having her smile at him. Capturing the attention of the most sublime being in all of Nirn. He kisses the top of her head, on the grey hairs that were making her shine like starlight. Few in number they were yet, it did not stop her from vigorously plucking them when she first discovered the change. A fear of growing old but beyond that, a fear that somehow he would no longer want her; only at this would he tell his wife she was wrong. The sands of time could not be stopped so she had conceded to let them come and Ondolemar took it upon himself to let her know she only became more beautiful as the days marched on. Theodora clutches his hands, bringing them across her chest and cranes her neck to look up at him.Â
“Ceri suggested I dress as Mara, she says Mama is as perfect as Mama Mara.” He softly smiles against her hair, another quick kiss.Â
“She is very correct but we already knew she was smart.”Â
“She is. Mara could be good…” Breaking from his hold, she goes closer to the mirror now, her reflection showing she is in deep thought.
“You do not sound so sure, do you have another idea? Anything would be lovely.” She smirks.Â
“Even Talos?” A tired sigh fills the room.Â
“What have I done to deserve that?” The crinkles on her nose form as she smirks.Â
“Be so easy to torment.”Â
“You do so enjoy doing that.” And she could keep doing it, a small price for the life they have now.Â
“I do,” quickly his wife turns around, approaching him and planting a kiss on his cheek; a suitable apology. “I was actually thinking Dibella.”

I read your story about the prince turned merman and I absolutely loved it! I adore how the other orca mers were very accepting of him even though he was different and they didn't know where he was from.
Also love the detail of some mers being air breathers only and some being water breathers only ^_^ Reminds me a bit of some works I did for worldbuilding where merpeople could breathe both water and air, but breathing in air is a bit harder for them sort of like humans if in a high altitude where the air is thinner. I love the idea of them having different biologies based on their species!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed that story so much, and that my take on merfolk reflected your own to a degree. I didn't think it would do very well, since it's not a romance, and it's 3rd person, neither of which tend to get all that much traction, with a few exceptions.
This is my entry for the @idvseasonszine Changing Tides zine for autumn!  wanted to draw Ganji, Antonio and Andrew check out their tumblr blog too @idvseasonszine
Content warning: descriptions of violence, a rotting corpse, grief
~Chapter Two~
I woke up to someone lying on top of me. I knew that was her and I knew how her little game worked, so I didn't try to look up to see her.
I reached behind me, feeling around for her hand until I found it. I carefully pulled it in front of my face. The sight didn't surprise me. Strips of her flesh pulled away from her bones exposing the muscle underneath. It was weird seeing someone you loved slowly decompose in front of you, but at least she was still here.
I must have accidentally woken her up because she pulled away from me. I groaned when she got up. I didn't like it when she did this. I didn't care that her flesh was tearing away in shreds. I've touched enough corpses in my life, so it didn't gross me out.
"Can you please stay for a little longer?" I pleaded. I didn't want her to go just yet.
I could feel her hesitate for a bit, then I felt her pruney fingertips touch my back ever so softly. She didn't say a word but I knew that it was a silent apology. She placed a small kiss on the top of my head.
When I lifted my head up to look around the room she was completely gone. I couldn't even feel her presence anymore. I dragged myself out of the hammock I made out of seaweed. There was no longer a point in staying in bed since I was wide awake.
I pushed open the stubborn wooden door that let out to the deck. I didn't really know if you could still consider it a boat since it was now covered in coral and seaweed. Schools of fish started in and out of the reef of shipwrecks.
As I was captivated by the sight my stomach grumbled for breakfast. Plenty of fish were around, but it just wasn't the same, or as filling, as human flesh.
My stomach grumbled again and I decided that it was time to pick the shipwreck clean of any tasty morsels that were still on it. Since the wreck was a couple days old now, most of the bodies were scavenged by sharks and other scavengers. So it took a while for me to find something that is still intact enough for my liking.
I dragged the bloated corpse to the surface so I didn't have to deal with any sharks trying to take it away from me.
As I got to shore I noticed flags waving in the distance. There were three ships on the horizon, but they were a ways away and I was hungry, so I carried on eating my breakfast.
Once I was full, I turned back to the approaching vessels. They were about ten minutes away from the rocky shore. I climbed up onto a rock and looked out on the gray morning sky. It was going to rain today, but clearly that wasn't the top of my priorities.
I started singing and the words just flowed out of my mouth like a deadly melody. I watched the chaos unfold as both of the smaller ships crashed into each other. Wood splintered and strained as the mast completely collapsed. As I continued to sing, worry started to creep into my voice as the biggest of all the ships continued, unaffected by what just transpired.
My song came to an abrupt halt as a harpoon almost took out my eye. The metal harpoon clattered to the ground behind me. It was obviously designed for siren hunting because it was big enough to hunt whales.
I decided that it wasn't worth it to stick around so I quickly made my way to the water. I dove into the cold ocean hoping they'll leave me alone.
If they were in fact siren hunters, then I knew I wasn't going to be safe in the ocean since they usually hunt with mermaids. I dove into my hideaway to grab whatever was most important to me. The first thing I grabbed was her jacket, and then it was my wedding ring. I wish that I could throw on the jacket but that was impossible with the giant fin running down my back. Same thing with the wedding ring, webbed hands after all. So I held them in my arms while I made a break for it.
I knew this atoll better than anyone else so at least I had the advantage when it came to unwanted mermaids. So hopefully, today wasn't the day I became some mermaid's lunch.
I looked behind me for a split second to see a flash of red and orange. I was always jealous of mermaids. Why did they get to have all the flashy colors? While I was stuck with desaturated purples.
Never mind, this wasn't the time to be envious. I dipped below some debris as I searched for somewhere to hide. If I were to swim out into the open ocean, it would be a terrible idea because I was outnumbered and outpaced. Or I was supposed to be outpaced, for some reason these two were swimming sluggy.
I ducked into a completely coral-covered vessel. It was the perfect spot since there were plenty of exits. I hid in its hull, where there were still plenty of barrels.
I hid close to where shipworms ate a hole through the wood just way enough for me to fit through.
I looked up to see her standing on the ceiling, her lips mouthed the word "run". I turned to swim out from the ship when my exit was blocked by a third mermaid. Before I knew it, I was surrounded on all sides.
As I lashed out at one another came from behind and gagged me with a piece of cloth. I snarled at them while desperately clinging to her jacket.
Just beyond one of the mermaid's heads, I could see her looking at me with sad eyes. Then something hard hit the back of my head.
