Is it ever okay for a white person to call out someone of color for saying something bigoted? A Black guy in my (majority Black) college class made a SUPER Islamophobic comment and it made me really uncomfortable (like I don’t even feel comfortable quoting it) but I wasn’t sure if it was my place to say anything especially because I wasn’t sure if it was wrong of me since I was white in a predominantly Black setting. Should I have called out his Islamophobia? Or did I do the right thing?
Imo going abt it w the framework of "calling out" in itself tends to lead to more conflictual discussion, I obv can't speak to that specific example but in general when criticizing ppl who I at least want to keep a working (if cold) relationship with try & see the broader point they were gesturing towards (usually due to the post 911 sec. state/dhs that point is something to do with "I want to feel safe" or "they seem to be fundamentally Different than us for some reason") & grant some premise of that broader point (or if entirely abbhorent at least phrase as "even if X were true..."), then point to history & material factors spurring the growth of counter-factors as an explanation of why they might feel that way.
That's also a part of why studying up on history outside of the confined, ultimately bourgeois lens we learn it through passively, is so necessary. & since all history is the history of class struggle, reality does actually tend to lean socialist - there's always a kernel of contradiction that dissolves notions of linear, ideal constructs that the bourgeois ideology ("liberalism") constructs post-hoc to justify its actions.
