It’s #tbt Throwback Thursday! In this 1957 photograph, conductor Daniel Shelton McLennan (1879-1959) greets his wife, Rosa, after completing his last run. McLennan worked for the Central of Georgia for 40 years. He retired to his home in Albany, Georgia, and planned to fish, garden, and visit his grandchildren. In all, he spent 54 years on the railroad, after starting work at age 17 as a flagman. Today, Norfolk Southern operates 1,705 miles of track in #Georgia and 1,304 miles of track in #Alabama. Today is March 4—Marching Music Day. Music is woven into the history of the railroad, and today honors bands that create music on the move. This page from the April 1929 Right of Way Magazine featured the musicians of the Central of Georgia: the Savannah Shop’s booster band (top) and the Right of Way band from the Macon Shops (bottom). The Central of Georgia Railway was formed in 1833 to connect Macon, Ga., with Savannah, completing a rail link between Chattanooga and the port. It’s #tbt Throwback Thursday! Engineer Edward C. Bean began working for the #railroad as a carpenter. By the time his article, “I Drive a Diesel,” appeared in the February 1949 Central of Georgia Magazine, he was behind the throttle of the Nancy Hanks II. The “crack streamliner” made a 588-mile round trip every day from Savannah to Atlanta. It left Savannah at 7 a.m. for the six-hour run via Macon to Atlanta, and returned from Atlanta's Terminal Station at 6 p.m. Bean wore a suit and tie to take the train—consisting of a diesel locomotive, a grill-lounge car, and a number of reclining-seat passenger cars—from #Savannah to Macon and back. “It’s a fine thing to like and be interested in your job,” he wrote. “I’ve been railroading for 50 years and I’ve enjoyed it all.” Today, Norfolk Southern operates 1,705 miles of track and connects with 17 short-line railroads in Georgia. #CentralofGeorgia #railroadlife #norfolksouthern

This photograph from the April 1950 issue of the Central of Georgia Magazine was featured in an article titled, “Tots Take to the Trains.” Students at the Jack and Jill Play School in Eatonton, Georgia, packed a bag lunch and took an eighteen-mile train trip to Machen. Many had never been on a train before. Pictured with the students (from the left) are engineer J.A. Ryle, conductor B.D. Knight, and teacher Norma Watterson. Field trips on trains were a regular part of the school curriculum in Georgia; during the first four months of 1950, 1,600 school children had taken trips on trains. Trains took students to both the state capital and the nation’s capital by the time they graduated.
