Venice 2025
The staircase in this photo is the Scala d'Oro (the Golden Staircase), located inside the Doge's Palace.
Named for its lavish use of 24-carat gold leaf and white stucco, the staircase was traditionally used only by high-ranking magistrates and illustrious guests to reach the heart of Venetian power—the doge's private apartments and the institutional chambers.
Ceiling Artistry: The barrel-vaulted ceiling features intricate stucco frames by Alessandro Vittoria and frescoes painted by Giambattista Franco and Battista Franco, which glorify the virtues of good government and Venice's maritime victories.
Design History: Though the initial project was designed by Jacopo Sansovino in 1538, the construction was later completed by Scarpagnino in 1559 during the reign of Doge Lorenzo Priuli.
