Tutorial for drawing characters with Down syndrome.

DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that this is an introductory drawing tutorial and has some generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People. It's more of an overview of features that are common in people with Down syndrome, not meaning to imply that every person with DS has all of them 👍 thanks.

Art I made of Grace in his wheelchair from my fanfic Dignity of Risk

I missed drawing wheelchairs, especially speculating how I can adapt them to different environments (like rocky sand on a beach). They're hard to draw but they're so cool and it's so worth it.

Description:

Meet Bryn, my new Tremere for an 80's Las Vegas chronicle! She's the host of a "true stories of the paranormal" talk radio show called The Ghostly Gossip, which is in truth a cover-up to lure out mortals with evidence of masquerade breaches - Bryn's the local Hound responsible for investigation and Dominate-based cleanup. Behind her is her ghoul, co-host, personal care attendant, and childhood best friend, Willow :)

Wings part of wool scarf. Seems to be able to do most functions of angel wings, except flight.

Diagnosis Summary:

Severe complex congenital systemic developmental disability syndrome of magical origins. Affected systems include musculoskeletal + connective tissue, neurological, gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, immune system inflammation, endocrine, cognitive, neurodevelopmental. Notable resulting secondary diagnoses recorded below:

Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 3 ("Requiring Very Substantial Support") ; nonverbal, high support needs

Congenital Absence of Wings, as observed in certain crownwing* species due to hybridity nature.

Aids: tilt-in-space manual wheelchair, symbol-based AAC device.

Extra Considerations:

Non-ambulatory; cannot stand without significant support.

Hair always extend beyond captureable frame.

Frequently observed in the university within Sovereign Territory, but no clear record of student/faculty/staff status exist to confirm.

Artist’s notes:

The cup is built with a straw but she doesn’t like straws so she took the lid off.

Set a few months after leaving the Temple.

Not totally sure about the shape of her nose; I’m not certain it’s consistent with the other drawing I did of her but I was sort of trying things out and tbh I think that because I’d been thinking about a different drawing I might do with Rovian who’s nose IS that shape and how I wanted to go about it slightly differently than usual I might have gotten a little mixed up. It’s not too far off what I think the shape of Guodei’s nose is but the bridge might look a little different? Not a big deal but I thought I’d point it out in case it’s inconsistent with other drawings (past or future). I did put the edges of the nostrils in this time which is what I was trying out and I think I’m satisfied.

I didn’t outline the scars in marker this time! I think that’s much better and more how real scars look.

Trying out putting some more effort into shading and I think it paid off in some places and didn’t come across as well in others. This is good information for the future.

Gave her a hitchhiker’s thumb like me.

She’s so awkward and doesn’t really want to make friends, but she’s really starting to get used to being around other people and she’s interested in how “normal” people interact with each other, so she comes to the food hall a lot.

Holding the World

I've seen a few people in the fabulous crackship that is bloodymary giving Simon an Eridian-made prosthetic and wanted to add my take on that :3 I decided to go with a body-powered prosthetic instead of a bionic one because of a couple reasons: 1) I think Eridians would work out how to make it A LOT faster, since they wouldn't have to deal with pesky electric parts (not saying they couldn't, just that it would take more time). 2) They're a lot more lightweight, so better for a planet with twice as much gravity. 3) I haven't seen this done before so I wanted to.

I have the headcanon that Simon retains some mutations on his skin almost as scar-like tissue (but maybe not quite, still figuring out the details) which makes it rather sensitive to the prosthetic's socket and harness, so I don't believe he would wear it for long periods of time. Eridians can make him other accessibility gadgets to help handle life one-handed tho! I might have given this topic some thought hehe.
