The non-profit organization Pew Charitable Trusts expressed disappointment over the weekend that for the eighth consecutive year, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) ended its annual meeting without designating marine protections in the waters off of East #Antarctica. Member governments also failed to reach consensus on designation of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the #WeddellSea and #AntarcticPeninsula.🌊💔 - A @UnitedNations special report released in September found that the Antarctic region is experiencing profound and rapid change, including warming ocean temperatures and acidification. - #CCAMLR members, who had a unique opportunity to be the first international body to act on the U.N.’s report, could have protected more than 3.2 million square kilometers of Southern #Ocean by designating the three MPA proposals. Without these additional marine protections, critical foraging and breeding grounds for #emperor and #Adélie #penguins, #toothfish, crabeater #seals, and many other species will remain #threatened. Posted @withrepost • @mitty I waited in knee-deep water, chilled to the bone but patiently waiting for the first one to go. Carefully assessing the water to make sure no predators are present, adelie penguins pack against each other on a frozen ledge in Antartica. As soon as the first ones go, the others quickly follow like dominoes. Adelies are not the largest penguins by far, but they pack a lot of charisma into their small frames and are so charming to watch. The future of Antarctica, and all of the animals that depend on the ice there, is threatened every day by the climate crisis, but only one marine protected area (MPA) has been adopted here, in the Ross Sea. I am working with my team at @SeaLegacy to encourage the establishment of three new marine protected areas. From awesome @paulnicklen They call him the 'Beast of the East'. Nikolai Valuev ( @nickvaluev )is a two time boxing heavyweight champion of the world and he made me feel like "mini me".
