It was related to the fuel crisis and truckers (and then general public) sharing info about fuel availability and speed enforcement. But especially interesting is how people starting ignoring the official callsign rules and making up their own nicknames, which I'm fairly sure led directly to phone phreaks, early hackers, and eventually everyone on the internet using creative pseudonyms.

Daniel sat up. This was it. This was fucking it.

He’s getting broken up with. Goddamn it!

‘Sherri’ cleared his throat.

“I’m missing you. There’s a *thing* I’m dealing with right now - “

Daniel snorted. ‘Yeah, right. A fucking wife and three snot-nosed kids more likely.’

“ - and I hope I’m successful because, if I’m not…”

Daniel blinked again. Shit, he was serious.

Sherri cleared his throat again. When he spoke Daniel could hear the tears.

“… if I’m not… then these past few months, talking with you, getting to know you…”

Daniel groaned as his dick pressed against his zipper.

“… it’s been the best goddamn time of my life. I hope - ”

Daniel ignored his throbbing hard-on and rushed to the table under the window.

Sherri’s breath whooshed across the airways.

Daniel’s tears coursed down his face.

Daniel gripped the receiver so tightly his fingers ached.

“I thought you’d left me.”

“Never, angel. Never!”

Daniel slumped on to the bare wooden floor. He wanted to hold him so badly, he hated hearing the fear in his voice.

“Listen, Liberty Bell, when this is all over, I…”

Daniel almost shouted down the phone.

“Yes, anything, yes!”

Another breath whooshed across to him from - he didn’t even know.

“… I want us to meet. I want to hold you and kiss your ‘tanned face’, feel your ‘I guess kinda cute bunny teeth’ on my body. I wanna kiss your body. I wanna feel your thighs round my waist as I suck your cock. I wanna ride you in the field behind my house as the sunsets beside us.”

Sobs wracked Daniel’s body. He wanted all of that and so much more.

The left radio is an old Kenwood TM-221a that one of the ham radio guys gave me, it doesn’t have any memory so I have to reprogram it every time my car shuts off, and it doesn’t have a ctcss card, so I can’t use repeaters that use tone, so it’s relegated to a simplex rig until I fix it. It’s a 45 watts though, so I can reach a known maximum of 25 miles / ~40km.

The right radio is an AM-only 4 watt CB, which kinda sucks (hence why I got it on clearance). Apparently the club up here uses upper sideband for their net, so everybody sounds garbled to me due to only half of the signal being received. Luckily they follow up back on the call frequency after the check-ins so I could at least say I heard chatter.
