With his shoulders strained, Rue White set the last of the bags down on the single bed to the left of the door, both duffles hitting the mattress with a sarcastic thump. The Academy had charted them in the dorms as Daniel and Rue sharing a dorm room since their prior board had made it clear that Caydin and Rue were in a relationship. So Caydin and Daniel had switched rooms on the down low.

Now that the bags had all been moved, Rue took a moment to scrub his hands over his face. He was tired. He hadn’t had proper time to do anything but manage the situation. Every second since Daniel had been caught playing blue hand orbs with his powers, Rue had been in and out of offices threatening blue blooded bureaucrats with Scarlotte and Johannsen. He hadn’t had any time to do much else. His mind had been set on instinct just to keep himself, Daniel, and Caydin inside the school system.

He didn’t really care about himself, Rue didn’t have much need for a graduated diploma considering the field he was in didn’t call for much more knowledge than how to load a gun and empty the chamber inside someone. But Caydin and Daniel’s education was a priority to him.

After a matter of hours the angel had terrified enough people to have the three of them transferred to a sister school where their credits were exchangeable. Rue had loaded all of their stuff into bags with a military precision, packing most of Daniel’s and Caydin’s things himself, folding clothes within three seconds and packing them. He’d stonewalled them both in an effort to keep his mind clear.

That, and he knew if he opened his mouth to Daniel what flew off his tongue wasn’t going to much more than send the blackette into the pits of hellish humiliation.

Classes didn’t start until Monday. Rue had driven them in the sedan through the night, barely saying anything more than necessary to keep himself on track. He was in the mode that he’d been trained to protect himself. This was a time to do damage control and run. And thats what he had to do to keep himself self.

But this time was different, he wasn’t just running to keep his ass from the fire. He had Daniel and Caydin to think of.

His mind traveled to Caydin, and blush began to heat his neck at the thought of how he’d treated the blond. Caydin had been a casualty; Rue knew Caydin didn’t have a backup, he wasn’t at the Academy on daddy’s dime. It hadn’t been his fault Daniel had created the situation they were in. But he was definitely a product.

He reached into his pocket as he walked to the balcony. The dorm rooms here were much nicer, he had to admit. Set up more like hotel suites than school rooms, there was a small kitchen area and kitchen set up outside the bedroom, designed to cut out the need for dorm common rooms and cafeterias. The kids were allowed to go off-campus certain hours of the day only with permission, and the weekends as well.

His hand bumped his phone as he drew out his cigarettes and lighter, bringing his thoughts back to the call he’d gotten an hour ago. He had a target at this school to protect, a submissive mission as the missionaries called it. He was ordered to shadow the boy and his group of friends for his superiors. The nature of the information he was to relay wasn’t specified yet, and that set him on edge.

Rue wasn’t good on making friends. He was annoyed.

He thought to check on Daniel as he lit up his cigarette and drew a breath. The blackette was less than conversational right now, and Rue knew that was a lot to do with the way he’d cold shouldered the boy. But what else could he do when Daniel had been acting on impulse using his powers when he knew how dangerous it was to himself and to his situation. Daniel didn’t know where these powers drew from, he didn’t know what using them did to him. He was extremely tired the days after he used his powers, leading Rue to believe it cost him energy and God knows what else.
