“DEATH BY TEETHING”

I found David Spears on the mortality schedule passing away March 1870, Texas, at 39 years old. What I did not know was that he had an eight-month-old baby boy that was his namesake. Baby David passed away in the same month, March 1870, and was listed right below him by “ditto marks.” The odd thing about the baby was he passed away from “teething.”

Thus far, in my many years of research, I had never seen “teething” listed as a cause of death before. I researched this death-cause and learned that “teething” was listed for any number of unexplained baby deaths when the doctor really did not know what caused the baby death. Today such deaths are referred to as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
