MISC STARTERS! / selectively accepting! / @catrani CATRA SAID: i’ve got your back, okay?
THE ENTIRE KINGDOM IS behind him. or, at least, he thinks they would be if they knew what he was doing. sage isn’t LYING when he says he’s studying, he’s lying when he says what he’s studying about. while he’s convinced half the palace that he’s immersing himself in old etherian magic books for the sake of DISTRACTING himself, the margins of his books are filled to the edges with notes, with POSSIBILITIES. if the stars are truly on his side, his hurried handwriting and constant all - nighters will be enough to save his father, enough to stop the endless waxing of time. but the one person sage cannot fool is his aunt catra. she’s too smart, maybe even smarter than him, at least in this way.
. at first, the prince thinks she’ll try and stop him. that he’ll have to fall to his knees explaining himself and the bags under his eyes. the thought of LOSING his father is hard enough to comprehend, but it’s the way his mother breaks down during meetings that gets to him. angie pretends everything is fine, archer goes off on her own, and glimmer can barely look at him because he has bow’s eyes. when catra catches him, sage throws himself over his notes, his failed elixirs, his discarded maps. not even a planet so full of LIFE has the key to eternity. soon enough, he’s in catra’s arms, sobbing about how it isn’t fair. his mother, his sisters, himself— there are too many years between them all for bow to simply die.
“ I CAN’T FIND ANYTHING, ” he sobs. “ there’s nothing in the library. i’ve torn through both floors, i’ve decoded messages, i’ve completed puzzles. i even went down into the chamber of queens to look for moonstone prophecies, but there’s NO WAY to harness my near immortality. it can’t be, aunt cat. it can’t be that on the planet we live in, that someone like my dad can just go. not after everything he did to save it. you can’t tell my mom i’m doing this, she’ll get even more upset. ” a sigh rattles through him, and he sinks further into her fur. soon, the sun will come up. it’s become a reminder that he’s running out of time. “ unless i figure something out. and i have to. i have to KEEP TRYING. ”
