Jayce is a dog, obvi, and Viktor's a cat. Except Viktor is more than just a cat he's part jaguarundis. He doesn't even know until he let some of the bioannalists have his blood.

Jaguarundis are very valuable on account of their rarity and that they were turned into domesticated slave pets for centuries. Even small percentages are valuable to a certain market.

Viktor doesn't tell anyone and gets a legal document saying no one can talk about the results of his blood test and it cannot be recorded or released. He blames his small ears and long tail on other genetics.

Jayce is just a mutt dog. He's got big teeth, folded over ears, and a big strong tail. He's got the eyes and tenacity of a true canine, it's why he's so respected. He liked Viktor. He's smart and goes for what he wants, what he believes in. And he smells a little weird.

Jayce likes that the entire lab smells like Viktor, likes it when Viktor absently rubs his head against stuff, likes it when Viktor's tail curls up around his leg when they're both working on the blackboard. He especially likes to when it's late and they're both so tired and Viktor rubs his head against Jayce, rubbing that certain scent on him.

Something happens and someone tries to blackmail Viktor into making a weapon or a bomb or something like that with the fact he knows the inventor is part jaguarundis and has proof. He tells Jayce, says it would endanger his life if anyone found out.

Jayce had never been an aggressive dog. Sure he's nipped a few people that had horrid things about his mother, but so did every puppy. But when he found out who was blackmailing Viktor, some lowlife undercity scum, he went a little... well he wasn't himself. He could blame rabies or maybe the undercity air had poisoned him. But when he returned to Viktor with the stolen medical documents covered in blood, it felt pretty good.
