Christ’s headquarters
Tuesday 1st March. Today is Carnival although not much is happening. Covid has killed Carnival and although it is still a public holiday the public stays at home.
The origins of Carnival are vague but the Portuguese don’t need much of an excuse to party. Carnival is held forty-seven days before Easter, itself a moveable feast. Easter comes around on the first Sunday after April’s full moon, which is the first full moon to occur after the spring equinox.
First to Castro Marim where the Ria Formosa segues into the Reserva Natural so Sapal de Castro Marim e.V. Real de Santo Antonio. A tour of the decrepit, Health & Safety free 13th century castle, chapel and gruesome Museum of Torture costs 1.10euro. There is a wall walk for keeping an eye out for invaders across the Gaurdiana River. Wooden railings and banisters are mostly broken or just not there.
Three moments in the history of this ancient border town are worth noting:
1.   When it became the Order of Christ’s headquarters in 1319.
2.   The War of Restoration between 1640 and 1688.
3.   The beginning of the 19th century after the French invasions.
The Castle, the Fortress of Sao Sebastain, the 17th century enclosure, the Shield of Santo Antonio and the Battery of the Registry are evidence of the area’s military and defensive strategic importance.
Over the modern bridge into Spain where the clocks jump forward an hour and the price of petrol drops by an incredible 30cents per litre. We pass the afternoon on a stretch of beach somewhere between Punta Umbria and el Rompido. Our quest for tapas proves impossible with the only open beach-front restaurant denied our custom on account of the rude waiter.
