Smith's analysis on Castiel
This is my opinion, don't like it, you don't like it 'nough said.
In the beginning of Season 4 of Supernatural we as the fans/viewers were introduced to Castiel. To be exact Season 4 episode 1 Lazarus Rising. We learned several things upon his arrival.
The true voice of an angel can damage structures. (Examples: Gas Station and the Motel.)
Seeing the true form of an angel damage or destroy one's eyes. (Examples: Pamela and the demons at the diner.)
That Castiel is impervious to the rock salt rounds and the demon killing knife.
That he is an angel of the Lord.
That he is possessing a devote man.
That he is the one that was sent to raise Dean from Perdition.
He also announces that "God has a plan for Dean."
Through the duration of Season 4 we get to learn more about him and his purpose.
That Castiel is getting to close to the people in his charge.
Once Anna is introduced that Anna once was a leader to Castiel.
That Castiel follows orders regardless. (Example: Having Dean torture Alastair.)
That Castiel has a low opinion of Anna due to her falling from grace.
Castiel is approached by Uriel to help break the seals and cause the rising of Lucifer.
Castiel starts to feel. He feels doubt.
He doesn't know how to function without someone telling him what to do.
In siding with his charges he was pulled from his vessel and dragged back to Heaven.
That whenever he makes a promise he keeps it. (Example: Watch Rapture)
That at least during Season 4 that Castiel will follow the orders of superior angels. (Example: He was told to release Sam from the panic room even though he knew what would occur.)
That he will rebel against his superiors. (Example: Using the banishing symbol on Zachariah to buy time for them they can escape.)
That he has faith in the Dean/the brothers. (Example: He takes on an Archangel after sending Dean to the location where the final seal will be broken.)
He assumes it is God's will.
That is the "Free to Be you and Me" episode we figure out several things.
One that Castiel doesn't really know how to lie.
Dean teaches him "that if people really want something they lie."
That he is at least a millennium years old and virginal.
That he is particularly angry at the Archangel Raphael. (Assume that it is due to season 4. I believe Raphael was the archangel that killed him.
Raphael makes Castiel question if it was God that brought him back or if in fact is was Lucifer.
We get a glimpse of what Future!Cas will be. He is basically human. He didn't take the transition well. He is broken, generally high, but yet still loyal to Dean.
That Castiel tries to find God.
That Castiel reaction to the Trickster gives away that the Trickster is in fact and angel.
That Castiel loses faith in God.
Castiel still has Jimmy floating around somewhere within him. (Example: Watch the episode "My Blood Valentine." Cas is enduring Jimmy hunger for red meat.)
That Lucifer himself finds Castiel peculiar and wants the falling angel to join his side.
Another moment of how much he will do for the brothers and the world is walk into a group of 5 angels and use a banishing sigil that was carved into himself. Which caused him to banish/ "brain-dead" himself.
Falling Castiel is cranky, drinks and doesn't really get the point of a shot gun.
The very last episode of Season 5 Cas Molotov's Michael with holy fire in hopes that it will buy Dean the 5 minutes to talk to Sam.
Lucifer smites Cas for this action.
Castiel is resurrected once again after Sam jumps into the pit.
Castiel heals Dean and brings Bobby back from the dead.
He assumes his position as "sheriff" of Heaven and vanishes.
As Castiel goes back to Heaven a minority of angels turn to him saying "that God must want Cas to be in charge."
Castiel attempts to teach the others that they have feel will and the ability to choose their own path.
Raphael tells Castiel to submit and follow his will, which is to restart the Apocalypse-that wasn't.
Castiel does not want to. He doesn't want all of it to be in vain.
He gets his ass kicked by Raphael.
Then he is faced with one of the biggest decisions in his life and that is "Find a way to stop Raphael and the Apocalypse or submit to Raphael's will."
His decision is to take on Raphael even though he knows that he alone doesn't carrying the amount of power that Raphael possesses.
He debates on asking Dean for the help when he is approached by Crowley. (Crowley is in a similar with Hell. Being the King of Hell.)
Crowley slides Castiel 50,000 souls, which Castiel uses to make his first stand against Raphael.
He lies to the boys to keep them from getting too involved with what is going on in the civil war of Heaven.
Castiel burns Crowley's bones upon accusations that Castiel working with Crowley on the search for Purgatory.
Castiel is the one that raises Sam from Hell.
During "The Man Who Would be King" we learn what wasn't shown to us. How Cas came to work with Crowley and why. That Cas is yet again asking God to give him a sign that he is in fact doing the right thing, and that if God won't that he will do what he has to to stop Raphael.
(Skipping over somethings and moving on, the Sam wall and stabbing Balthazar.) He smites Raphael and allow Crowley to make a getaway then announces that he is their new God.
Castiel eliminates the angels that were loyal to Raphael. (Angel genocide.)
He takes down the KKK and the not "Westboro Baptist Church."
Tells Crowley to take back the job of King of Hell.
Controls the flow of souls.
Realizes that he is burning from the in out like Nick!Lucifer.
Dean tries to bind Death to kill Cas.
Death points out that Castiel is not God just a mutated angel that has some big bads chilling in him.
Death is all like get him back to the gate, have him give up the souls or there will be more problems.
Goes nutty in the politician's head quarters.
Sam let's Cas know that even though he is far off the reservation he is family and they will help him.
Cas is dying, and tries to tell Dean he is sorry for what he has done.
On floor,burn up,not breathing.
Says that was unpleasant and that he will redeem himself.
Force pushes Bobby and Dean then starts leaking black goo.
Dean points out that the vessel is about to explode.
Levi!Cas walks into the lake.
From all of this, this is what I have learned about Castiel:
Castiel is an angel of the lord.
He is capable of feeling human emotions.
When Castiel approaches a fight or battle he goes in fight to win... Not to survive. (All the times he has "died" or when he used the banishing symbol on the 5 angels and himself.)
That he learned from Dean about free will, its price, and family.
Castiel in season 6 was faced with a difficult discussion, either submit and everything be in vain or fight. He fought.
I believe when he popped open purgatory he knew full well the likely hood of him surviving that amount of power would be quite low.
The show doesn't make him out to be a bad guy in any sense. It makes him out to be a man that is faced with many challenges who chooses to fight instead of doing nothing. Though some complain about his choices and how he went about it... Honestly if you were in that character's shoes and were faced with all he had been do you see yourself not making some if not all the choices he made?
