Gena Rowlands, the intense, elegant dramatic actress who, often in collaboration with her husband, John Cassavetes, starred in a series of introspective independent films, has died. She was 94.

"This is the first of your films in which one of your characters exhibits mental illness. Did this present any particular challenges in portraying it?"
John Cassavetes:
"Listen: I myself am half crazy. And I think everyone is on the edge of madness but doesnât want to admit it and pretends that itâs the other person whoâs wrong, that we hold the truth. I firmly believe that any woman who loves her husband and has been married for a while doesnât know where to invest her emotions, and that this can drive her to madness. Some find outlets, deciding to be more independent, for example. This particular woman intensely believes that when youâre a good wife, thereâs something reciprocal that must happen, but she doesnât know what. Sheâs not truly crazy, but frustrated beyond what one can imagine. She doesnât know what to do and, above all, sheâs emotionally and socially inept.
