Derivatio Figurarum Genitivarum Singularium Nominum “Apollo” et “Carthago” / The Derivation of the Genitive Singular Forms of the Names “Apollo” and “Carthago”
I was wondering why the Latin genitive singular forms of the non-Latin words Apollo and Carthago end in -inis and not -onis. After some research, I began to think I understood the reasoning behind these forms. It seems to me that they derive from the Greek forms of the words. Here is what I have:
Apollo -inis m. “Apollo” [ὁ Ἀπόλλων -ωνος “Apollo”] [Apollo] nominative singular Ἀπόλλων Latinized [Ἀπόλλων + -is Latin genitive singular termination] [Ἀπολλων-/Ἀπολλον- + -is] real stem/variant stem and termination [Ἀπολλον- + -is] variant stem and termination [Apollon- + -is] variant stem Latinized [Apollun- + -is] on becomes un [Apollin- + -is] un becomes in [Apollinis] genitive singular
