In the nineteen-seventies, carob infiltrated food co-ops and baking books as if it had been sent on a COINTELPRO mission to alienate the left’s next generation. “Delicious in brownies, hot drinks, cakes and ‘Confections without Objections,’ ” the 1968 vegan cookbook “Ten Talents” crowed, noting, too, that it was a proven bowel conditioner. “Give carob a try,” Maureen Goldsmith, the author of “The Organic Yenta,” encouraged, but even her endorsement came with a hedge; in the note to her recipe for carob pudding, she confessed that she still snuck out for actual chocolate from time to time—though less and less often! No one under the age of twelve could stand the stuff.

Everyone has to make sacrifices sometimes.
Does anyone know what Carob actually tastes like?
Genuinely curious as I thought about trying to find Carob bars for my Season 4 premiere binge since Ben always seems to have then or be eating them.
BUT there is no local grocery that sells Carob near me and Ive only found like one online candy retailer who does Carob candy (Miss J's and it have mixed reviews)
Ive heard the taste isn't bad, its supposedly a nutty kind of flavor and most of the reason people dont like it is because it was marketed as a chocolate replacement while having a different flavor profile then chocolate.
Like, which tracks with the N6 in CC because they thought the bars were chocolate and then they were jumping scares by a more nutty/earthly flavor.
feelings about carob?
i ate this as a child and liked it (gen x or older)
i ate this as a child and the thought of it fills me with rage (gen x or older)
i ate this as a child and liked it (millennial or younger)
i ate this as a child and the thought of it fills me with rage (millen./younger)
i have eaten this by choice as an adult and like it
i have eaten this as an adult and never will again
it’s ok i guess
i have never tried it but i know what it is
i actually thought it was a band or something before reading the poll options
my feelings can’t be contained by a mere poll click and you will hear about them
the generational breakout here is because my gen x friends with hippie parents seem to have much greater carob vitriol than my millennial hippie child peers, so either it improved sometime in the late 80s/early 90s or my sample is biased. personally i liked it even more than chocolate, and when i shared that recently with a dear gen x friend she immediately lost like 75% of her respect for me as a person.
