if rotta the hutt is gonna join the new republic the funniest possible outcome would be if he replaced cara dune, i mean he already seems like he could be a heavy weapon bruiser type so why not have him steal gina carano's role

Nothing is stronger than the bond between a kickass bisexual woman and the wet cat of a man she's decided to carry around for fun
I can't be the only one who thinks Colonel Ward was supposed to be Cara Dune, right? Or that it would mean more if it was Cara Dune? It's awesome we get a new female character in a position of leadership and I'm sure I'll like Ward just fine and Sigourney will be great. But she isn't Cara.
(For anyone who hasn't been following me long-term, my opinion is that Cara should have been recast after season 2.)
Cara was part of Din's story pretty close to the beginning. She may have been a secondary character but she wasn't insignificant. We're introduced to a former Rebel soldier, someone with skills and background but who left. Later we'll find out she is a surviving Alderaanian, a perspective we haven't gotten in the new canon's movies and shows except for Leia. There's a lot to potentially explore in her background. For now, she's Din's closest friend and ally. He fights alongside her and they move in a smooth tandem after their initial encounter. She's the first person he goes to when he needs backup to protect Grogu, and offers her free run of his weapons cabinet (after previously being very protective of his things, as seen with Mayfeld and crew). She has his back in every situation, including running out into blaster fire to rescue him and tries to save him from his wounds. When dying and believing this is the end, Din trusts her enough to tell her the location of the hidden covert and implicitly trusts her with the continuing care of Grogu. (Greef and IG-11 are in earshot for all this, but he's addressing Cara.) Despite the tension of that whole sequence, they still find a moment to share a fun arm wrestling contest (unfortunately Grogu misunderstands and ruins it, but it was clearly a friendly game).
Later in season 2, Din again returns to Cara (and Greef) for help with his ship. He doesn't leave Grogu in the school until Cara assures him that Grogu is safe - it's her word he trusts. We see their smooth and easy teamwork throughout the entire episode, and when they realize the kid is in danger, Cara instantly tells Din to go. She understands exactly how important the kid is to him; there's no "help us get out of here first." He knows she has the skills to get their team out, and she is only grateful and happy, not surprised, when Din comes back around to save them from the TIE fighters. A few episodes later, when Din has lost his child and home, it's again Cara he seeks out first for help. She may protest for a moment, but she's 100% willing to risk her new job (possibly getting herself back on a bounty list like she was earlier?) to help Din and Grogu, while looming behind Din glaring at Mayfeld the whole time, clearly ready to jump the minute he's less than cooperative with her friend. (And even though he's an Imp and Cara is quite biased, she's okay with letting Mayfeld go when Din suggests it.) When Din has to go undercover as a trooper, it's Cara holding the beskar. He could have chosen Boba, who understands its significance and went to great lengths to get his own back and has sworn a debt to Din; Boba could possibly considered more culturally understanding of Din and Mandalorians (not going into all that here lol). But Din gives his precious beskar to Cara. That's who he trusts with his most prized possession. And we see that Cara is who he brings with him to get the Imperial shuttle, Cara is a vital part of the mission along with his other allies, and while Din arguably has every reason to kill Gideon after what Gideon did to Mandalore, he takes him in alive. Because Cara asked him to. Out of every other character, Cara is shown to be the one Din trusts most.
As for Cara herself, I started talking above about what a rich background full of potential story hooks she has. I made a post a while back about how she could have been in season 3, in fact I STILL think that showing us the New Republic, flaws and all, would have been more meaningful from a character who is trying to do the good thing again, believe in what the Rebellion fought for, and being unable to ignore the cracks in the facade. Cara said in season 1 that she was afraid of being uploaded to a mind flayer, imagine if she found out the New Republic was using this technology on Imperial refugees! Instead of "oh no, poor Pershing" we could've gotten a HUGE horrified revelation for Cara and then she has to decide - is she going to desert and run away this time, or is she going to try and do something about it? (Maybe she finds Ward then, a sympathizer who is starting what will become whatever the Rebellion was called in the sequels. I literally can't remember oops.) You could also throw in to the mix that she's been craving community having lost Alderaan, so she tries at first to find that in the New Republic, and instead realizes it's what she did find with Din and Greef and their allies. Not to mention that on Din's side, she could tell him how important it is for Grogu's future to get rid of the Empire. She could even open up and tell him that she lost her home, her planet, and if they're allowed to rebuild they could do it to Din's community or to any future home Grogu might have, Jedi or otherwise. And it could have been a really beautiful moment where Cara, a survivor of Alderaan, and Din, a survivor of Aq Vetina and Mandalore, could connect and heal over losing their homes and finding someone else who truly understands that pain.
But all of this to say - yes, Cara was important to the story of The Mandalorian. She was important to Din Djarin. And how awesome would it have been to see a former deserter shocktrooper standing as a leader at a New Republic outpost and tell Din that there's no one else she trusts more to take out her "deck of cards" and mean it. And Din in turn being able to express not as a contractor but as her friend that he truly understands how important it is to her. And just imagine if Cara, a survivor of Alderaan, had finally healed enough to say it's not about revenge.
Again, no shade to Colonel Ward. I'm sure she'll be great. But it should have been Cara Dune.
