Hauled off onto the old Republic Acclimator-class ship the Southward Toad along with several of the smugglers before Tritonio managed to get his ship free and away, she's thrown into a jail cell and interrogated. The crew of the Southward Toad is mostly non-human, disdained by the Emperor's regime, tossed into this outer rim post with an old ship and few resources and even less supervision. Against the attempts of the strict Captain Grime, they're little more than brigands themselves, and they have little care for humans. They believe Sasha when she lies about her age to make herself seem more in control, and when, in her panic, she spills that Marcy mentioned the rebels, that makes her situation even worse.

She makes enough of a bother of herself that Grime can't let her out of his sight, and reluctantly drags her along with the crew on a routine visit down to the planet's surface. That's when they get attacked by a leviathan krayt dragon, which Sasha helps fight off (if only for her own survival), earning the respect of many of her prison guards. During this fight Grime also sees something in Sasha he hasn't seen since his days serving under Jedi General Barrel the Brave in the Clone Wars: this girl is a Force Sensitive. No wonder she's so dangerous and convincing. But if he can secure her loyalty to himself, have his very own Jedi... that feeds a fire of frustration and ambition in him that's been brewing for a long time.

Grime rewards her greatly for her heroism, begins to train her in combat but also testing her in subtle ways to try and bring out that sensitivity. Sasha has no love for her parents back home, her world is her girls and they're on Tatooine somewhere, two needles on a planet of sand dunes, waiting for her to find them. She just needs to get high up enough in the unofficial ranks of this outpost to use their resources to find Anne and Marcy.

And eventually, she does. A small moisture farming community has been making a ruckus, refusing to bow to Imperial authority, and when they arrive to put the rebelliousness down... Anne is there. Right at the heart of it, taken in over these past weeks by the ringleader of it all.

Sasha and Anne's initial joyous reunion quickly turns sour with the political implications of their new loyalties, Sasha to—not the Emperor or anything, but to the ideology of "peace" through fear and control that she has always used on her friends, and Anne to the struggling people she now sees that the Empire oppresses.

The duel, scar, and Anne standing up to Sasha for the first time play out basically like the canon Reunion, but with an additional moment when Grime spies the music box among Anne's things and his eye goes wide. On threat of hurting a hostage he has, he demands one of the three crystals on the box. Anne and Sasha watch in bafflement as he and Hop Pop have this unexplained stand-off of their own, which ends when Hop Pop reluctantly tears out the purple gem and chucks it to him

The ultimate outcome of this reunion is so disastrous that word actually gets back to the Empire's higher ups, and Grime is labeled a traitor for his failure. Sasha, Percy, and Braddock are the only ones who remain loyal and follow him into life on the run.

Grime soon shows Sasha the two pieces of the purple gem, broken in their escape, and admits that he recognized it as a kyber crystal, and her as having the potential of a Jedi. He's tired of the Empire pushing him around, but together and with the right allies they could make a change. Put themselves in control instead of some wimpy Emperor on a throne lightyears away from everything that matters, never having fought for anything in his life.

He begins to train Sasha with him limited understanding of the Jedi and the Force, gained from fighting alongside them, and tainted with his own ideas of power that lean a little more Dark Side. And Sasha takes to it. Fast. Together they eventually construct her a pair of twin lightsabers.
