Well at least can still doodle and write while tabletâs out! Hereâs a small silly scene Iâve been meaning to write for quiiite a while, time to revisit the olâ Etherium AU! âS an interesting one cause its one of Boffinâs more benevolent iterations, while its one of Techâs shadier ones- lets them get about as close as they can to meeting in the middle. (serves as a sort-of prequel to the other scene. Mostly was just an excuse to draw Tech and TB with the wrong hats @techmomma)Â
Ed Gable rested by the fire, waiting. Â He had frequented most, if not all of the taverns in both the spaceport and the planet below, but this was certainly one of the odder ones. Â It was a bit more upscale than what he was usually accustomed to, being on the (in?)famous tourist district of Pier 93, looked to have been recently renovated as well, but it still carried an air of seediness as well. Â Most tables, Edâs included, were secluded within alcoves, and further obscured by a fog comprised of both incense and smoke, and whatever enhancement was blocking out the continuous cries of the slug-lions outside further served, perhaps intentionally, to muffle the conversations at the other tables. Hats lined the wall, of every cut and quality, much more than could be accounted for by the current number of patrons.
The proprietor of the inn came by- a short, aging man with very thick sideburns and eyebrows- to drop off his drink. Â
âSorry to keep you waiting. Â May I take your hat?â
Eddy relinquished his hat to the man, who placed it on one of the few vacant knobs on the wall nearby. Â But instead of carrying on with his duties, the proprietor took a seat across from him and smiled.
âNow then, I believe we have some business to attend to, Captainâ Â
Eddy narrowed his eyes. Â
âI donât think ya know what youâre talkinâ about.â
The man raised his eyebrows (with no small effort, they were quite large)
âOh, I assure you I do. Â You wouldnât be seeking me out if I didnât know my stuff. Â Interesting reaction, by the way, to what could have been merely a lucky guess, us being in a spaceport and all. Â But I wonât insult either of us by claiming thatâs the case- I know exactly who you areâ
âWere.â Interjected Eddy.
The proprieter waved his hand dismissively. Â
âWhatever you say then, mister Gable. Â Boffin Barrow, at your service- I believe weâve done business before, albeit indirectly. And now I have some more information you might be interested in.â
âGerâonâwifitâ Ed grumbled
âIts about that devil, Johannus and his band oâ ghouls.â
âHeâs been looking for something, and Iâve found out what it is⊠and where.â
âWhatâs that to me?â Eddy asked unconvincingly.
âOh please, as if youâre not a class-A meddler.  Takes one to know one.  I thought I had ensured the package would be delivered directly to the void- too bad youâre not still in business, Iâm sure  your crew would have gotten the job done properly- but instead it got picked up by some salvagers.â
âTheyâre a local operation, Mr. Khanâs Salvage Co. Â It wonât take long for Johannus to figure out his cargoâs made it here.â Â
Ed downed the rest of his drink and shook his head. Â
Boffin shrugged. Â âDoubt we would have questioned free loot floating in the ether back when we were that young either. Â Canât blame them for trying to make ends meet, but we can try to undo the damage theyâve done.â
âDunno, mighâ be for the best, he wouldnâ dare come here.â
âHa! Â I know you wouldnât trust the Navy to be able to protect the port against the likes of him. Â Only reason we havenât had any trouble from him yet is he hasnât had any reason to, until now. Â Fix this. Â Iâve worked too hard to get where I am for olâJohannus to come and screw everything up.â
A bell rang as the door to the inn opened.
Boffin glanced over.  âAh.  Speak of the other devil⊠ Sorry, I need to attend to this.â
He left the table to greet the immaculately dressed canid at the door. Â âGovernor! Such an honor to have you grace my humble establishment! Â Your hat, if I may?â
âI wonât be staying.â Â Sniffed the governor, nonetheless handing over his hat. Â âIâm here to make sure youâve fixed the issue with your permit.â
âAh, of course governor! Â I trust everything is now up to the standards of the Pier?â
The governor glanced around dismissively . Â âIt suffices.â Â His feline eyes narrowed as they caught sight of Eddy. Â âThough you could perhaps be more selective with whom you let inside.â
Eddy glared right back. Â âFunny, I was aboutâta say the same thing.â Â
The governor let out a low hiss. Â
Boffin moved between the two men âNow now, gentlemen, thereâs no need for this, how about we all calm down and Iâll fetch you both a drink?â
The governor turned his head up and away. Â âThat wonât be necessary. Â Iâve gotten all I need here.â Â
âI thinâ itâs time fer me to head out as wellâ
There was a pause as they both stared expectantly at Boffin. Â
The governor coughed. Â âMy hat?â Â He asked icily. Â Eddy nodded towards his own hat as well.
âOh, I did ask if I could take it.â Â Said Boffin jovially, but backtracked as the two men glared at him. Â âJoking, Iâm joking of course thatactuallyworkssomeofthetimethough.â
He pulled the two hats off of the wall to return to their owners- but as they put them on, they found they had been switched at the last second. Â
âOh, hm, that isnât right is it, apologies, I do have so many to keep track ofâ Boffin âapologizedâ, as he corrected the âerrorâ, returning the hats to their rightful owners. Â âGood evening, gentlemen. Â Hope to see you again. Â I might have something important to talk about with you governorâ
Boffin sent a look towards Eddy
âDepending on how things go.â
