Captain Comet
Sometimes known as the ‘First Man of the Future’, the heroic Captain Comet is a metahuman named Adam Blake. Adam was born to a a kindly family who operated a dairy farm womwhere in the American Midwest. Early in his adolescence, Adam’s ‘metagene’ was triggered into bloom when he witnessed a blazing comet pass overhead in the night’s sky. Soon thereafter, the youth discovered he possessed superhuman powers. These abilities included greatly augmented physical and intellectual abilities as well as a burgeoning psychic powers. Over time, these powers enabled Adam to fly and project a protective force field around his body.
Some time later, Adam happened upon a troop of humanoid androids who had come too earth seeking to terraform the planet for their alien masters. Donning a makeshift costume, Blake became Captain Comet and he successfully repelled these invaders.
He continued to operate as a superhero, taking on various threats. He built a spaceship called The Cometeer and set off to explored the cosmos. He had many more adventures off in space before eventually returning to his home planet.
Many years had passed on earth and Adam returned to an earth substantially changed from the one he remembered. He returned to the era of heroes and was astounded to discover beings such as Superman, the Flash and Green Lantern were now somewhat commonplace.
The telepathic villain know as Gorilla Grodd took advantage of Captain Comet’s relative naïveté and used his psyche powers to manipulate Adam into acting as a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains. Adam was eventually able to free himself of Grodd’s thrall and he helped The Justice League battle the Secret Society.
Captain Comey would go on to have ongoing adventures alongside the League as well as with Adam Strange, Hawkman and both the L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. squads. In the updated DC ReBirth continuity, Adam Blake was revealed as a ‘Neo Sapien,’ one of the first of new type of metahumans representing a possible next stage in human evolution. A live-action version of Adam Blake features in the television series Naomi, portrayed by actor Chase Anderson. Captain Comet first appeared in Strange Adventures #9 (1951).
