Capcir is a shire situated on a plateau between 1500 meters (4,920 ft) and 1700 meters (5,580 ft) over sea level in the Pyrenee mountains. Its capital city is Formiguera. It has aways been a shire with low population, but recently it has started to develop its economy thanks to the tourism that comes for its ski stations.

The climate is especially cold in Capcir, and thanks to that it is one of the few places in Western Europe where the Siberian plant Ligularia sibirica can be found.
