Oh btw were the pins on the wrapped arm in gregor's base ego always the sapling of light abilities symbol? Because I'm not gonna lie I do not like the symbolism going on here. Like. All the base ego have the sinners dressed in the same stripped uniform, except for Gregor's, where the uniform is used to bind and restrain the arm. And is seal with Dante's wizard invocation. Like. That's fucked up right? It's pretty much saying it's only being held back, barely, by limbus company and Dante.
Also. The base ego inflict 10 of a random status effect, and the emperor does the same with most of his skills. That being said, the ego's passive give SP loss up to ennemies and allies, while clashing the emperor's guards heal your SP. Also the emperor seems to be overall a tremor/charge ID while base Gregor is a rupture ID. I think it's pretty interesting. The emperor also doesn't have any of the healing lcb Gregor has.
The panic effect were really good this canto btw. Obviously they always have some storytelling going on, but this time I felt like they actually were "panic" type, in the sense that they did seem like the thing the character feared most about themselves. This is mostly true for the nursefathers, but it's really true for them imo.
Valencina and Callisto are pretty obvious. Val is scared to truly be the shame of her family. Callisto can't bear the though his art is outmoded. The pinky's nursefather panic effect is also straightforward.
Then Matthias and Rien's panic effects are interesting in the things they implied about them. Like. Matthias's panic is mad rampage, which to me implies that he doesn't want to be seen as a merciless killer, but is afraid he is. And Rien's imitation of a father, to me, read as somewhat bitter, like he wanted to be a real father but couldn't.
The allies panic types were also pretty interesting. I'll read distortion detective eventually, but moses's panic being "body broken beyond repair" tells me she probably didn't enjoy the war very much. Erza's panic being insucirity : mask is also QUITE telling. On the other hand Vespa's vexation is not.
I also find it quite telling that we can't see Vergilius's panic type at all, because to me it implies that Dante is so incapable of imagining him scared and out of his mind that they legitimately can't access that information.
Honorable mention to the roach emperor's heartbreaking "kill me", really making it feel like in his panic some of Gregor's actual personality is able to break through and communicate
Dishonorable mention to Ryoshu's Alaya. Does nothing. Googling the name brings me to the wiki page of a town in Türkiye.
Ryoshu's new ego sentence calls Araya by name so there's some fuel to the "she remember her somewhat" theory.
