I don’t recommend this age of introduction, but when I was 9 or 10 my mom took a Women In Literature class and the textbook contained all of The Bluest Eye. The chapters start with Dick and Jane children’s book excerpts, so I thought it was for kids and read it. I didn’t understand all of it, but I could understand a lot of it. It starts from the point of view of a little girl. It has the history of America, what Love feels like, what being poor feels like, what a new couch feels like, what ice cream feels like— what being a little girl feels like. Like 1984 it shows how external hierarchy can infect the most sacred private human experiences, especially our relationship with ourselves. It is one of my favorite books. At some point Oprah picked The Bluest Eye for her book club so my lizard youngster brain was like ‘oh that’s not punk’— it was now too normie for me because I was cool and knew who George Bataille was. lol. This book is perverse and beautiful too, but very few teen edgelords rep it.
