Campanelle - Temporary Score: 10
Description: flattened with one frilly edge; rolled up into a cone, like a tall ruffly flower; sold in my neck of the woods as "trumpets", which, no what is wrong with you, trumpets don't have filly rolled edges?!?
First Take Points: 5- so i was determined at some point in this challenge/experiment/ridiculousness to do pasta and cheese, and i was going to do a four cheese + four pasta dish, and then i decided that was really going to hamper my ability to figure out how each individual pasta shape was performing, so i backed up a bit and did a four cheese + two pastas (that writeup is coming!.... it probably should have come before this one, but *shrug* i am chaotic neutral at best today), and i had a lot of leftover cheese, and a recipe that i've been wanting to try for awhile, so Campanelle got the nod: cheesy pasta bites! this is basically a mac n cheese situation, tucked into a muffin tin and baked, and so out come little cheesy pasta muffins!
this ended up being a great shape option for this - the campanelle stay loosely rolled once cooked, but are pliant enough that when you stir them up with cheese and press them into muffin shape, you get lots of great tucks and edges, and the ones on top crisp up a bit in the oven. this was already superior to macaroni in cheese; once they were muffins, pft, sorry mac, not a chance.
Remix Bonus Points: 3 - this is a great option for cheesy, a great option for saucy; it might not be my first soup choice, but i think it would be fine in a soup as well.
Amusement Points: 2 - they are a fun shape! i still don't think they look like trumpets, but they DO remind me of the huge speakers that were on ancient first gen record players (... were they called records and record players back then???) if you know what i'm talking about? i guess if you really want to argue that frilly trumpets are still trumpets... i'll let you argue that but i am over here quietly disapproving of your take.
Annoyance Deductions: 0 - the trumpet name doesn't count here. i can be annoyed with the grocery marketers for that one; this lil pasta shape didn't do anything wrong, just hanging out over here all frilly and ready to go cheesin'.
Alternative Uses: dammit. fine. use it as a mouse trumpet and leave me alone.
