âApplying for Love (Entry-Level, 10 Years Experience Required)â
There I was.
Early 30s. Gender-fluid. Emotionally aware. Slightly traumatized. Fully hungry.
Inside Jollibee.
Because apparently, both job hunting and dating require two things:
patience⌠and fried chicken.
I opened my dating app like it was LinkedIn.
Same energy.
Different lies.
Thatâs when I matched with him.
He sat across me, holding his Chickenjoy like it was a personality trait.
âBakit nasa dating app ka?â I asked.
He blinked. âObvious ba?â
(Thoughts: Sarcastic agad. Red flag. Ayoko na. Turn off. But sige, gutom ako.)
I took a deep breath. This wasnât just a date.
This was an interview.
âOkay,â I said, wiping gravy off my spoon like I was about to negotiate a salary.
âLetâs get straight to the point.â
He nodded. Nervous. Good.
âI donât care about your past. Malalaman ko rin âyan if we last.â
Pause. Eye contact. Establish dominance.
âBut I need to knowâwala kang sakit? Namamana or hindi.â
He choked on his chicken.
âWaitââ
âRelax,â I said. âHindi ako against sa may AIDS. Iâm just sayingâI also want to live long. Preferably with WiFi.â
Silence.
I continued. No mercy.
âDonât twist my words. Donât overthink. Gusto ko same page tayo.â
He slowly put his drink down.
âFinancially literate ka dapat. Kasi ako, oo.â
âMay emotional intelligence.â
âHealthy relationship.â
âMay space ka. May space ako.â
âNo control issues. Hindi tayo CCTV ng isaât isa.â
At this point, the crew at Jollibee was probably listening.
I didnât stop.
âGive and take. Mabuti kang taoâmakikita ko âyan sa pamilya mo.â
âAnd most importantlyâŚâ
I leaned forward.
âMay sense of humor ka.â
He stared at me like he just unlocked a new level of fear.
âNow,â I said calmly, âkung sasabihin mong meron ka lahat niyan⌠okay. We can be together.â
Beat.
âBut marriage? After na. Kapag wala nang pagpapanggap.â
I smiled.
âKasi sayang ang oras kung puro kasinungalingan lang.â
I sat back.
âI want to learn from you. At matututo ka rin sakin.â
Pause.
âBakit ako ganito?â
I shrugged.
âPanget ang realidad. Wag ka nang dumagdag.â
Long silence.
Even the gravy felt uncomfortable.
Finally, he spoke.
âUhâŚâ
Deep breath.
âIâm gay.â
I nodded.
âOkay. Payag ako.â
