Here we have the peak of 1960s ergonomic design: a silver-and-black box that looks like it was assembled in a toaster factory. Sheās smiling because she just realized she doesn't have to thread film through a series of complex sprocketsājust pop in a plastic cartridge and hope for the best. With that massive flashcube perched on top, sheās approximately three seconds away from blinding everyone in a ten-foot radius with a light intensity rivaling a supernova. Itās the ultimate accessory for the casual photographer who wants their memories preserved in slightly grainy, wonderfully warm Technicolor.

This moment wasnāt planned at all. I was photographing a tiny gecko through a Petri dish taped to a glass door, using two speedlights on each side. Suddenly, this cat showed up out of nowhere ā completely fascinated by the little creature on the other side of the glass.
The gecko is safe. The cat is safe. And I got this unexpected shot that became the highlight of the whole session.

I realize I havenāt shown yāall my camera setup.
My beloved R3. It does 30 frames per second, and does so silently, because it hasn't got a mirror like a traditional DSLR that bounces the image coming in through the lens barrel up to your eye and that has to flip out of the way for every exposure. Instead, what the camera "sees" is rendered electronically into an image displayed in my viewfinder.
Probably my favorite thing about this bad boy is that it's got two shutter buttons: one for shooting landscape (horizontal) orientation. and one for shooting portrait (vertical) orientation. Genius, huh?
This is just the camera body. To make it work, you need a lens.
The 70-200mm f/2.8. Unlike most zoom lenses, this lens keeps its maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout its entire zoom range, and the barrel length stays constant.
It's made to work with a traditional DSLR, so to fit it to my mirrorless R3, I need a mount adapter (right).
The whole setup, assembled:
It weighs about 6 pounds (2.7kg). I don't use a tripod; tournaments don't allow those in anyway. I hold the whole thing up to my eye with my right index finger on the shutter button and my left hand supporting the barrel.
The whole setup, shown with a ballpoint pen for scale.
And all the other doodads I need to make this photography business work. Clockwise from 12 noon: an "air rocket," for blasting dust off the lens without having to touch it; double-bank battery charger; lens cleaning paper (for fingerprints and the like); lens/sensor cleaning fluid; sensor cleaning swabs; high-speed memory cards; spare battery; card-reader; external hard drive and backup external hard drive (for storing photos).
Worth it? 1000%. See the difference between phone pics (left column) and pics taken with this setup (right column).

I've been trying to find a camera bag that fit my needs...and I just fount it! This is the Black Snipe Pro 7L Camera Sling Bag from VSGO. It's big enough to hold my camera body and up to 2 lenses. I can even fit my 70-200mm lens if unzip to the 9L expansion mode. It also has pockets for extra batteries, cables, straps to hold my tripod, and more! It's super lightweight and keeps my gear dry and free of dust. #sponsored

Camera Gear for the Low-Spoons Photographer
YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, but I have inflammatory arthritis, chronic vertigo, and a smattering of less-related autoimmune situationships that I've learned to work with and around over the years. When I first got my telephoto lens, holding the camera long enough to find and photograph owls would leave my hands swollen for hours. I do a lot better now.
A few notes: I'm leaving out my various lenses and filters and such, since those aren't directly related to coping with chronic pain. But if there's any interest, I can share those another time. + Nothing I recommend below is an affiliate link. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is just me sharing hopefully helpful things.
And: some of this stuff is expensive. I've been accumulating gear for many years. Prioritize what you need most for health and joy, and build out your kit as you go along, upgrading down the line if needed.
