@arthur-rex i definitely agree with your assessment! My definition of "attraction to almost all his knights" was more to the fact that if you do a 'sexual' reading of his interactions he seems to have an aesthetic/physical/sexual attraction to all the knights of the round table at some point (e.g. his meeting with Percival). Of course, this depends on how you read the text, and just because Arthur was attracted to someone it doesn't necessitate that he would have acted on that attraction. I skimmed to the meta you linked and I think I'm more of the view that Arthur actually had very little sexual experience. I think initially he may have done casual flings or two before season 2, and never between people he was close with. Maybe with a knight or a stranger. But after he falls for Gwen, I feel like he keeps himself non-sexual out of loyalty to her (just because I think that's what Lancelot would have done and I think Arthur takes after Lancelot's ideals quite a bit). And another thing - if he did have casual flings I think it would have been with men, because he doesn't seem that confident with during his interactions with women. This is all only my thoughts though 😂🙈

Well, yes I think we agree canon!Arthur is a sexual creature (although across different modern reincarnations I write that his sexuality does change, because I think it’s fun to explore many different Arthurs in this way) but anyway, I concede canon Arthur likely had the odd one or two thoughts and certainly admired his knights (privately) in his mind. We’ve all seen his approving eyes in that gifset where he greets and shakes hands with all his future knights 👀😂
And yes, I agree, our blond boy likes to uphold a moral code, doesn’t he? Sleeping around when already in a committed relationship is not something I can see Arthur doing either (unless bewitched/possessed or drugged/taken advantage of - but that’s another story).

However, outside of a committed relationship (and before meeting and falling head-over-heels for Gwen) I think he may have been a bit naughty (SORRY MUM), and with both men and women. And that’s because I think in other iterations of Arthur in the Arthurian legends he was quite a promiscuous sort. So, I like to honour that in my retelling (which combines elements of BBC Merlin with the broader legend). Peasant strangers and casual noble acquaintances were probably the winners/losers here, certainly not his close friends. I know Arthur comes across as lacking confidence with women like Mithian etc (well she was bloody gorgeous, can you blame him?) Still, that probably is because it’s with these women (in the BBC series) that Arthur is expected to ‘perform’ in an open courtship by Uther. It’s the expectations of the court and assessment of his ability in a long-term relationship that makes him nervous. Otherwise, I think he’s fairly confident of his ability to tease and have fun with another partner (especially S1-S2 Arthur) within agreed-upon parameters decided beforehand.
So I think if you were to put Arthur in a chamber with a maid (or in a room with a visiting knight) who’s keen on him and he’s ok with them, particularly after a few drinks, they’d have a good, no-strings attached time together. Arthur would have been a gentleman (or not, if the girl/boy liked it rough?) and the following morning they’d have left on good terms. I don’t think Arthur would bed any hussy; he’d get a sense of their character before trying anything. And why does he do this? THE MAN IS UNDER A LOT OF STRESS, that's why. And he just likes to have fun / enjoy life with other people. Hence why a bit of casual consensual sex goes a long way to clear his mind and help him cope with the ever growing demands of his father and the expectations of the kingdom.
Oh, regarding siring bastard children; I don’t think it would have happened. Lol, I figure Arthur practised coitus interruptus outside of his marital bed with Guinevere. Impregnating the female maids = therefore unlikely. Furthermore, male Pendragons seem rather... infertile(?) Given that Uther couldn’t get Ygraine pregnant and Arthur never gave Gwen a child (as far as the BBC writers were concerned). Morgana’s mother Vivien was the highly fertile lady in my hc, and her daughter I believe is also similar to her mother in that respect (*cough* conceiving Mordred at first and only attempt in non-BBC Merlin related media *cough*)

Oh, yeah the gay attraction. So conversely maybe to popular opinion, I think canon Arthur’s only issue with M/M couplings is he has trouble accepting being the ‘bottom’ particularly during these one-off sexual encounters. And that’s because to his mind, he is the crown prince and has a reputation (and a level of control) to maintain in these hook-ups. Now, in a committed romantic gay relationship (see: Merthur, Arthelot) that dynamic would change (I’ve already said I imagine he’s 50/50 versatile with a confident Merlin). As for Lancelot, uhhh I still think Arthur’s most likely to take charge, but Lance could definitely ‘top from the bottom’ with him on more than one occasion 😉😌
