Amtrak - Taylor Street
In a view from the Taylor Street bridge, Amtrak train No. 322, the Calumet, is equipped with former C&NW long distance bi-level coaches and is seen backing down to CUS from the 12th Street coach yard, in October 1984. The cab car will lead on the eastbound trip to Valparaiso.
Slag is a byproduct of steelmaking. Dumped while molten, “it killed everything it touched, then hardened into a substance similar to asphalt.” But today a diverse array of native and rare plants grow on the Calumet region’s slag sites. UChicago alumnae are making the case that slag sites are novel ecosystems, valuable in themselves.
Maybe it’s not just a brownfield or a wastescape. Maybe it’s a novel ecosystem.

Sailor Take Warning According to the old adage, we should be okay here, as these images were taken in the evening, but the eyes in the sky do look a bit sinister to me. Here two ships are moving southward on Lake Michigan: First (with the eyes looming) is the Calumet, bound for Chicago, I believe. It's loaded and running low in the water.
Prior to that, I caught the Joyce L. Vanenkevort headed for Grand Haven, Michigan. That's down the coast from where I was standing (seven miles south of Pentwater, on the west coast of the lower peninsula) and so is relatively close to shore. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken July 7th 2023.
