Silas is visited by Ieuan and Ianto with their New Year celebrations. They gift him with an apple decorated with three sticks, raisins and a piece of holly in exchange for small gifts like treats or trinkets.

Just how is Silas supposed to eat this apple with all these decorations stuck onto it?!

Happy new year! Or Blwyddyn Newydd dda!

Had to do a quick drawing of my little creature take on a Welsh new year tradition of making a Calennig. I can imagine it hobbling around on it’s little leg branches.

Asides from the animals of the Chinese zodiac, there is a distinct lack of New year based creatures. Pork is often eaten around new year's but that's as much as I could find. Then I was reminded of the Calennig ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calennig) - A welsh tradition; involving an apple on a tripod of twigs and adorned with cloves and a sprig of a bush. These would be left in the home or offered by children in exchange for sweets. This little thing was seen as a token for good crops for the net year.

It reminded me of a Christingle ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christingle ), which is something I've made when I was younger around Christmastime (ahh...religious education. I was a lost cause, lol).

I felt this thing in itself would be a new year based creature, running around on its tripod stick legs offering new year blessing in welsh. It would leave little gifts for the Children, and if seen in the home, will bring good luck for the new year, and it's harvest.

Because I haven't done it here, I'm gonna sing Calennig! Well, type out the words.

It's an old tradition, and not many people around here do it any more, but you go to your relatives house, knock on the door, and sing this verse. It's meant to be before midday but eh, the internet is timeless. XD It's to wish you good luck for the new year.
