A Reading and Signing with 2020-2021 Texas Poet Laureate Emmy Pérez

About the writer:

Emmy Pérez is the author of Boxes with Zero Tolerance (Mouthfeel Press 2025), With the River on Our Face (University of Arizona Press 2016), and Solstice (Swan Scythe Press 2003, 2011, 2019). Her latest book Paper america: New and Selected Poems was published in March 2026 as part of the TCU Press Texas Poet Laureate Series.

Pérez is the recipient of a 2022 United States Artist Fellowship. In 2020, she received a Poets Laureate Fellowship with the Academy of American Poets when she served as Texas Poet Laureate 2020. She has also received poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. In 2019, she received the inaugural Modesta Avila Award from LibroMobile in her hometown Santa Ana. She is also a past recipient of the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation Award and has held residencies at MacDowell, the Ucross Foundation, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Since 2008, she has been a member of the Macondo Writers’ Workshop for socially engaged writers, and in 2010, she was part of the inaugural cohort of CantoMundo fellows (2010-2012). Pérez is a graduate of Columbia University (MFA) and the University of Southern California (BA). ​

Over the years, she co-founded two writing collectives: the Women Writers Collective of El Paso and Poets Against Walls collective in the Rio Grande Valley.

Arte Público Press Writer reading and signing with Lupe Mendez/Arte Público Press Writer lectura and firma de libros con 2022–2023 Texas Poet Laureate Lupe Mendez

About the writer:

Originally from Galveston, Texas, Lupe Mendez (writer/educator/activist) is the author of Why I Am Like Tequila (Willow Books, 2019), winner of the 2019 John A. Robertson Award for Best First Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters. Mendez is a co-founder of the Librotraficante Movement and of Tintero Projects, a Texas-based organization that works with emerging Latinx writers and other writers of color within the Gulf Coast Region, with Houston as its hub.

Mendez earned his MFA in poetry from the University of Texas at El Paso. His work has appeared in the Kenyon Review, Gulf Coast Journal, the Texas Review, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Split This Rock, Poetry Magazine, and Poem-a-Day from the Academy of American Poets, among others. He has received fellowships from CantoMundo, Macondo, and the Crescendo Literary/Poetry Foundation poetry incubator.

Mendez is the 2022–2023 Texas poet laureate. He lives in Houston, where he has worked as an educator for the last 22 years.

Mouthfeel Press Writer reading and signing with Juania Sueños/Mouthfeel Press Writer lectura and firma de libros con Juania Sueños

About the writer:

Juania Sueños is a queer MeXicana poet, novelist, and translator. She co-founded and is the Executive Director at Infrarrealista Review. Her hybrid poetry collection topography of a border / line bird (Mouthfeel Press, 2025) won the 2026 NACCS Tejas Foco Poetry Award. She is the literary section editor at the Caldwell Hays Examiner. Her work has appeared in Acentos Review, New York Quarterly, Sybil Journal, The Skink Beat Review, Porter House Review, Nat. Brut, and Westchester Review. She holds an MFA diploma in Creative Writing from Texas State University and other boring credentials given to her by institutions. She’s the author of UnAmerican Dreams (TAVP 2022), a librito of essays and testimonios from immigrants impacted by State violence. She credits el cariño de sus ancestros Carolina y Arsenio, still ablaze in her heart, for her well-being and accomplishments.
