As eyes are tuned to the Olympic feats in South Korea, we call your attention 100 miles west of Pyeongchang, to the city of Icheon, the center of South Korean ceramic manufacturing, and the source for artist Jean Shinās LIRR #MTAArts project, āCeladon Remnantsā (2008), at the Broadway Station in Flushing, Queens. Ā Shin created large-scale mosaic murals featuring the shapes and silhouettes of traditional Korean pottery forms out of thousands of hand-selected celadon fragments donated by the city of Icheon. Ā Celadon wares are among the most widely admired of Korean ceramics. If a vessel is imperfect, it becomes scrap and joins the mountains of fragments in the Icheon region. Shin was determined to use these cast-off fragments, and the artwork serves as a metaphor for the history, culture, and identity of the Asian population in Queens.

Taverns
1.Ā Ye Ol Watering Hole is owned by Chantal, an extravagant, harsh, and inquisitive human woman in her 50s. The interior of the tavern is a large wooden room with several tables, a large cooking fire in center, a mezzanine area looking over the main room, a long bar, and several animal heads mounted on the walls and a few dart boards against one wall. The menu includes pickled sausage and mashed potatoes (8c), sweet and spicy stuffed squash (1s), and poached garlicky eel (2s, 3c). The most common drinks are ale (3c), cheap wine (2s), and cider (7c). [cheapest]
2.Ā The Jumpinā Rabbit is owned by Felix, a depressing, stern, and irritable human man in his 90s. The common room is split, with one half of the room raised a few feet above the rest, with a bar that stretches right across it, so that the bar at the lower area is much higher than on the platform. There is usually a band playing and several people dancing. They hold nightly rabbit races in the front lawn every evening which patrons can gamble one. The most popular meals are smoked crawfish and curd cheese (2s), cheesy potato soup (6c), and roasted catfish and ale (3s). Drinks include honey ale (7c), mulberry gin (3s), and raspberry wine (3s). [avg]
1.Ā The Purple Chicken Inn is owned by Roxanne, a perfectionistic human woman in her 60s who is very kind and compassionate to her friends and family but extraordinarily vengeful towards her enemies. The common room of this inn has perfectly lined up tables, perfectly symmetrical rooms, neatly made beds and purple wallpaper. The only rooms available include 2 single beds with a wash basin, chest, and armoire for 7c/ person. [cheapest]
2.Ā Crossroads Inn is owned by Henriette, an immoral, graceless, soft-spoken human woman in her 30s. It is a three story building of brick and timber with several windows. On the ceiling behind the bar are mounted three maces and the inn is mostly decorated in reds, blues, and purples. The rooms on the 2nd floor are carpeted, include 2 beds, a wash basin and std furniture (7c). The Top floor houses 4 suites which include a bedroom with one queen bed and two single beds, a sitting area, two windows, and a wash basin (7s). [avg]
3.Ā Galloping Mare is owned by Federica, a fearless, silly, uncultured middle aged Halfling woman. Most people consider her to be extremely awkward but she never notices. She has a habit of calling visitors ādudeā regardless of their social standing and likes to smoke cigars and stand very close to people- making most tall-folk men very nervous. The inn smells a little, because of the stable but is the only inn that will house horses. The rooms on the ground floor have 4 beds with a small chest for each cost 5c (2 rooms on this floor are specially designed for small-folk). Rooms on the 2nd floor contain 2 beds and standard furniture (7c). Rooms on the 3rd floor are the same as the 2nd but have better quality beds, locking doors, and smell a bit better (2s). [pricey]
Temples
1.Ā The Library of Ohma is led by Librarian Remi, (LE sp priest 4) a level- headed, crude, and insensitive human male in his 50s, who is currently estranged from his eldest son, Ludovic over a nasty argument over his sonās owing him back for a loan of nearly 200g after which some very nasty things were said. The Library is a 4 story tower of stone. The first 3 floors are full of shelves of books that curve with the walls. The first floor has a shrine to Ohma in the center and the 4th floor houses the living quarters.
2.Ā The Temple of Kant is a squat rectangular building split into two sections. The front section has an altar to Kant and a few desks manned by money lenders, while the back houses sleeping quarters and storage rooms. Vaults are housed in a deep basement below the temple.
Ā Ā Ā a. It is led by Silver Trader Vanja (NG dwarf cleric 3, 140 yrs), an obnoxiously loud, haughty, extravagant middle aged dwarf woman who is surprisingly fond of halflings, as they remind her of an old friend of hers.
Ā Ā Ā b. The everyday matters of the church and all banking is handled by Steel Banker Cewen (NG m half elf bard 5, 306 yrs old), an old man. He secretly wishes he were in charge of the church, rather than Vanja and fears losing face in front of his fellow priests and town-folk.
3.Ā The Temple of Ral is led by Bishop Bruno, (LN m human sp. Priest 5th) a snarky, impolite, conservative but forgiving human man in his 20s (think Dr Cox). The temple is a large 4 story building of brick and stone. The first 2 floors have about 30 small healing cells. The top 2 stories consist of rooms for orphans and temple workers as well as learning rooms which often host a priest of Ohma. Ludovic, the estranged son of Remi, works at the temple as a teacher and is usually in a terrible mood anytime his father happens to visit. Ā
Shops
1.Ā Blacksmithās is owned by Roger, a gullible and dim-witted, but happy old human man that just celebrated his 103rd birthday. Itās mostly run by his son Roger Jr (80), grandson Roger III and many many great and g-g grandkids. The shop is smoky from the forge in the back. The front room contains a glass display case holding several highly decorative weapons, on the wall behind are displayed swords and shields. To the left are hammers, nails, crowbars, horse shoes, and other useful items. To the right is what they call the knickknack paddy-wacks typically statues, toys, necklaces, and simple furniture.
2.Ā The General store is owned by Eloi, a perceptive, sarcastic, brave human man in his 40s that can do very accurate voice impressions. This shop is rather cluttered and unorganized. Available goods are bags of grain, flour, beans stacked high, rakes, farm goods, a plow, reams of cloth, boots, and occasionally a bow.
3.Ā The Herbalist is owned by Karine, an inquisitive, proud, human woman in her 70s that loves to ramble about trivial stuff. This shop is almost like walking into a forest, with dozens of potted plants, vines crawl up one wall. Against one wall, she or her assistant sit to take special orders. Along the other wall are several jars of various dried herbs and spices. Mostly she sells assorted herbs and spices but is usually willing to take orders for mundane concoctions that she finishes in a few minutes or up to a few days.
