re: Sallowlands I really did like the ongoing throughline of Caguama and Alphonse's worldviews but also on some level the final reveal. I think Age of Umbra is the setting that most lays bare the contrast of hope and fear as attitudes, and these two characters not only embodied them, but we saw this in how they acted! Caguama connected with the Tatchra and sent it away; Alphonse pointed out this meant it lived to savage other people. Caguama made good faith attempts to connect with other people, which paid great dividends with the traders and helped them realize the situation with the demons right away, but it put them in a vulnerable position with the Dova. Alphonse meanwhile was pretty much suspicious from the get go; this kept him safe, but closed off opportunities and insight; as we saw in the latest episode, he resisted the visions and the information with it.
It also works on a mechanical standpoint and in how they perceive the situation. Caguama is a seraph in the halcyon domain, and old enough to faintly recall the world before the Umbra. He is driven to the future by memories and promises of what came before. Osha is his past and her quest is his future. Caguama is focused on what was and what could be, but not always as attuned to the now. Alphonse meanwhile is extremely wary and stresses to many that dwelling on the past as a place to restore is a waste of time; it's more important to accept the present and act on that. He has little focus on the future. His powers, fittingly, show the dark side of the past, and are very of this age.
And yet, until the end, it seemed Caguama would die (and Vico thought so as well!) and Alphonse would likely live. They both do; Alphonse taking on new adventures with Bowen under his wing, and Caguama returning home to live out their life in peace. Which was a fascinating reveal: Alphonse and Caguama are both parents who lost their wives, but until this last episode I assumed Caguama's child had possibly died just as Alphonse's daughter had, rather than that Caguama had chosen to leave him [to be fair, presumably an adult given Caguama's age] to adventure. Fear can protect but also close off opportunity; hope can nourish but also lead to restlessness and dissatisfaction.
The narrative doesn't say that either of these is the right attitude, just as it makes it clear that there are those of ill-intent among adherents to the veiled gods, their intended usurpers, and new powers that have since emerged. If anything, it validates Sister's view of everything as cyclical and in balance. In doing so it allows these seemingly opposing personal philosophies to both have their moments. But I think it was remarkably well done from both Vico and Zachery to have these clear and opposing philosophies that drove their characters' actions and provided some source of conflict and discussion, but did not tear them apart.

Crying real tears rn at an old turtle traveling for years and years across the harsh deserts and swamps and forests of the Sallowlands for his deceased wife, avoiding raiders and hunters and awful Umbra-touched creatures with a STUFFED BIRD PUPPET in their bag just in case they needed to cheer somebody up
I really think this cast of survivors is gonna make it out this time not because they’re scrappy or clever or have a boomerang are powerful enough but because Caguama speaks 2-3 words to someone in a silly voice and it single-handedly changes the genre
