In the quarterly style class I teach, a LBD (little black dress) is an item I suggest in a 10-piece Capsule Wardrobe, but until now, I have never advocated for any particular style (considering I own many styles myself). . . For this week's posts, I decided to write about the versatility in styling a 'silky' #slipdress; and to illustrate the enduring appeal of its design, show how it can be styled for day and night, and how it has been styled from the 1990s through today. . . Slip Dress Look No. 1: 2000s Day Styling -Boy -Meets-Girl . . Continuing with the 'two neutrals and a pop of color' I introduced a few weeks ago, this wine colored asymmetrical #cowlneck feminine-cut slip dress paired with an on trend (plaid) masculine style blazer, balances out the 'sexiness' of the piece making it daytime appropriate and an early 2000s go-to styling option. . I especially love the red stripe that runs through the blazer which is highlighted by the color of the dress. . These white booties are still trending, and they elevate any ensemble, adding a crispness to the overall look. . I opted to accessorize with a long tassel necklace (which I prefer to wear tucked into the cowl) AND a printed-paisley silk scarf tied like a choker (it would have been as equally stylish tied around a wrist). . The hobo bag is a relaxed piece, juxtaposed with the structure of the blazer and the sexiness of the dress. . . One More Thing...The LBD: I just want say that I own this particular dress in a wine color as well as black...if you already own a Little Black Slip Dress, try one in a dreamy jewel tone! . . Two neutrals and a pop of color is my go-to trend as of late; starting with this wool-blend vest (worn as a dress) in a sand tone which pairs well with black or with any shade of grey. I love the leopard trench because it is not only a standout piece, but it anchors the entire look. . . Styling Tip: Forego a regular belt, and try a belt bag (fanny pack, bum bag) in a smooth leather upper instead. Neutrals are the perfect backdrop against which to add color (as in yesterday's post), but a neutral + neutral + neutral = an unmatched color combo! . . If three (or in this case four: black, tan, grey and white) neutrals are too much 'neutrality' for you to try at once, try black and tan (or black and grey) instead of your go to black and white. . . A word about this collar add-on: I tell my clients to splurge on timeless wardrobe pieces, but go the inexpensive route with trends! The sherpa trend is still going strong after a couple of winter seasons, but why pay a fortune for faux fur? This collar from @Target is a cute add-on and an ultra inexpensive way to sport the sherpa trend (especially now that this collar is 50% off and available in 4 colors). Confession: This was the first time I tried out this collar, and it has two ties to secure the bottom...which was fine when the coat was closed, however when worn open, the collar was all over the place (hence the make due button wrapping you can see 😳). I have since worn the collar again, but on a vest and secured the collar (and ties) with saftey pins and the result was fantastic! . . Shopping Tip: NYFW is currently going on. Did you happen to catch the @tomford show? One word: #luxe. His FW2019 line displayed the best combos of leather suits, silken pants, velvet blazers and plush-faux-fur hats...and all in the dreamiest of jewel tones! Why wait until the fall to stock up on these trends? Spring is coming, and retailers are moving out cold weather inventory to make room for spring clothing...so that means winter clothes are on sale (President's Day is next Monday).
