I think their dynamic in general would be very like on again off again coded. Like one week they would break up and then the next they would run back to each other and go through like a near death experience that forces them to reevaluate who they are emotionally at the moment

I think the idea of sally leaving puffy for Wilbur would come about maybe in a moment of weakness. They’re on an off week and there’s this guy and he’s charming and he’s kind and he’s consistent and he’s everything she wished her girlfriend would be all of the time. That she’d be the figure on the head of the ship like when they first met.

and of course eventually Wilbur shows his true colors and he’s awful and sally leaves but there’s nothing for her left in the ocean or on land. Does she really belong anywhere now that she’s left everyone who cared about her.

On the other hand I think Puffy would be defeated by the rejection. Because there’s this guy and he’s everything Sally wished she would be all the time. But she can’t change herself, she can’t change her way of life.

And anyways, isn’t it the pirate’s sacrifice to leave everything behind in return for freedom?
