Fears. They can weaken anyone.
By doing so, people are consumed by it, and then they give up. They land instead of learning how to fly.
In the series finale of Stranger Things, Jonathan Byers shares that he is studying filmmaking at NYU and developing an anti-capitalist cannibal movie titled "The Consumer", describing it with the metaphor, "the more it eats, the hungrier it gets".
Power turns into corruption. Abuse. Vecna exploits people's fear to haunt them.

It makes a much better ending if we choose to fly together.
