It was dumb not gassing up the car before she drove into the mountains but now her Wrangler was officially on fumes and she wasn't going to make it back to her house. Absolutely ridiculous that she still had to care about things like gassing up her car when she still didn't understand her new biology. At least her day was enjoyable; the long hike was vigorous enough that even with her advanced physiological skills, she was tired. Maybe it had to deal with bounding up the mountain at a near-improbable angle.
Her scuffed hiking boots made the only noise in the gas station. Loading the nozzle into her car seemed to echo around the asphalt as though there had never been another creature ever in the vicinity. The hairs on the back of her neck were raised. Something was watching her. Mal turned around slowly, her hands automatically going to the knife she always carried on her hip. It had been used to cut rope more than once and she didn't go into nature without it. "Hello?" Mal called.
She shielded her eyes as car headlights swung in but even the brighter illumination, she couldn't see anything beyond the black curtain of woods that bordered the gas station. She turned back to the pump as the other person got out, hoping that the feeling would go away. It had been a long time since she felt like prey.
