ITT bursaries/scholarships for 2023 are out- I know a few of you are interested and if anyone wants any help with applying, please do hit me up.
One could talk about the wisdom of paying people £29,000 tax free to train, when they won’t have that kind of take home pay until about their 5th year of teaching (Assuming pension contributions and some kind of student loan).
To be clear, I support some kind of trainee bursary- I think English/DT/Biology are at about the right level, given student loans and additional help for childcare etc are also available. But having people “earn” so much on their training year can set them up for disappointment in their first few years of teaching.
But some of the money spent on these bursaries might be better spent on retaining existing teachers...
(or, alternatively, put teacher pay up in general, obviously).
