The lips were modeled in the 'Cassius clay' while it was in a plastic state, but the radial marks were cut-into and worked when the clay had dried out to a leather-hard stage. After the clay was fired into stoneware (cone 4) I burnished the surface with stainless steel brush to get the metallic highlights. It was only after the piece was finished and I was listening to some music that I gave it the title in homage to Una Mae.
Una Mae Carlisle (1915-1956) singer and pianist. 'Beautiful Eyes', 'I Can't Give You Anything But Love', 'Mad About Love', 'There'll Be Some Changes Made', 'You Made Me Love You', and 'You're Gonna Change Your Mind' are some of my favorite recordings.
