A letter arrives at Vykkers Labs 16, slightly stained and smelling like koffy.
"Dearest Dr. Lenny," it reads, "I realized it's been a year since you earned your doctorate; and also a year since we last spoke! I was never a great fit for the mentorship program, as I'm sure you recall. Vykkers Labs 16 is a respectable institution and I'm sure your work is keeping you very busy! Hopefully not TOO busy? What is it that you're working on again? Do please keep me updated with your current research. Is it chemistry related? Maybe you could help me isolate this molecule I've been-"
"Oh dear- I've gotten off track- apologies! Here is the reason for my letter: Between you and me- we've recently had a few vacancies open up- maulings and such- and well, Labs 13 is always looking for bright young Vykkers to expand our brands. Have you ever considered a change of scenery? Maybe we could grab lunch and discuss your future? Oh dear... is that too presumptuous of me? So sorry."
"That's all I have for now... please don't let anyone know I asked about your job... ESPECIALLY NOT Dr. Vyle!"
-The letter is signed in wobbly script: Dr. Burnadette Vykkers
Lenny stares at the letter in confusion, reaching up to scratch his bandages head (damn that 117). Had it really been a year since he’d earned his degree? Time truly flew working in an airship. And someone actually wanted to talk to him?
He had fond memories of the other vykker from his school days, even if he had to walk on eggshells around her and calm her down in stressful situations (not that he did too well), such as the time he accidentally set a desk on fire after a beaker exploded or a little flizard flew into the lab and he had to get it out. The fact she wrote a letter to him at all was astounding, nobody really talked to him anymore aside from Vyle.
He turns to his desk, grabs a piece of paper and decides to pen a response.
I’m pleased you decided to write to me after so long, I hope you are doing well. Currently I’m shadowing Dr. Vyle, he’s much more stressful to work with than you ever were (there’s a reason the interns call him ‘Vile Dr. Vyle’)! Especially when he’s upset.
You most likely have heard about the incident at our lab with a test subjeckt escaping. I’ll admit, I let me guard down around it and it hit me in the head when I was turned around. It stole my keycard, released most of the other test subjeckts, broke hundreds of moolah’s worth of equipment, and escaped!
Vyle is angry with me of course and I’m not sure I blame him. I should have known better than to turn my back on a aggressive organism that has bitten me and used some very crude language. Hopefully we can find her soon (yes, we discovered it’s a queen) . Perhaps you’ve seen her picture on the news or in the papers? I could send you some of my notes on her if I can get them from Vyle’s office. Do let me know if you see her though, I trust you will turn her over to us.
And…about working at 13. I’ll have to decline at the moment since I’m still learning with Vyle and he’s not keen on potentially giving up secrets, even if I won’t talk, and he’s very angry after losing 117. Lunch however, does sound divine! I know this place near one of the dockyards that’s very good and you needn’t apologize for asking anything.
I hope to receive a response from you shortly,
Lenny folds the letter and places it in an envelope before leaving his dorm and looking for an intern to send it out…
