This part is just a more polished one of smh I’ve said before but first: the story

Simply, it isn’t quite interesting

As in. It feels like it really lacks conflict + unpredictability and if there is conflict, there’s little weight to it. Whenever Hyde or Jekyll are in trouble, they always get away with it without any overarching consequences, which just makes the story feel less meaningful and the ending undeserving. Hyde fucks stuff up in the beginning so Jekyll has to hide him. Sure okay no big deal because other than the mental torture that will be inflicted onto Jekyll there aren’t any issues . He gets chased after for going to the bazaar once and then near the end but that’s it

Adding onto that, I feel like they skip over characters processing stuff(Jekyll’s death, the reveal) and the. Reaction doesn’t rll hit that much. Because there there’s no long term effects, in the end everything is fine and no one is hurt nor cares. Same with the whole nightmares chapter,, Hyde’s cruelty just kind of gets swept under the rug for the sake of his happiness for the lack of better phrasing.

And they also don’t really do anything without other characters. Rachel, Lucy, Frankenstein don’t. Really have any development. It would be under

The comic also erases both Jekylls and Lanyons flaws to make them more like able. I don’t think I have much to add on that but it makes both of their characters less interesting, same w their dynamics . It’s like the story wants to be sure that you like those characters so much that it erases the traits that made them interesting. Also not a huge fan that they just replaced Utterson with Lanyon.

I’m not even gonna speak on it but I find it humorous that they made Lanyon, the more conservative leaning character a black man. Just that it’s ironic. And they gave him a lame white man name. Robert. Fucking Robert

On the topic of the designs, they’re also pretty… generic. Most characters are just skinny , young and conveniently attractive. Which. I dislike more so in the context of Jekyll. Him being fat is also a part of his character since he is well.. a rich white man . A rich white man in the 19th century won’t be skinny

Hyde’s characterization and the message that comes with him . Tgs Hyde is more like a bunch of traits that seem Hyde-ish (his weird asf mischievous and prankster nature and all the spooky shit) thrown together rather than an actual character with essence and personality and their own choices who doesn’t just rely on blorboified character stereotypes . He is a concept of a Hyde he is not Hyde as a character. He’s like puddle level but he’s not even like able he’s just horrendously mischaracterized. And puddle level doesn’t even have to bad bc like. Frankenhole Jekyll. Even though the glass scientists had so many pages the only thing that changes about Hyde is that he isn’t an annoyance to Jekyll’s anymore, nothing about his character changes because his personality consists of a few traits mashed together. And even that doesn’t feel earned because even though it’s somewhat talked about the story never build itself a sense of meaning that cannot he easily taken down and because the story cannot decide if it wasn’t him to be a separate force that talks to Jekyll of a part of him. And the message again . It annoys me because that’s the whole reason everything in the book goes down. Jekyll cannot accept how he was made because the Victorian society lacks this things called “AWARENESS OF MENTAL DISORDERS”so therefore just considers himself abnormal and drowns in his own hate. It’s what leads to him seeking an outlet to his desires instead of seeking help. Because there is no help for him, he cannot trust anyone and it’s not like he has resources to deal with it better. Tgs just throws all that in the bin . It’s like Jekyll and Hyde but he did have supportive people and the real him wasn’t that bad and Jekyll cannot do any real damage because his crimes are self defense or whatever the fuck and they all shit rainbows and throes up butterflies

Hyde does also get horrendously woobifief because of that which…. Might not be the best choice considering that that is a violent man who takes out his emotions on others while also coked up I guess .

HELLO!!! Personally . I must admit that I’m not the best bug to ask about adaptations but. Personally, I did quite like the 1931 one (warning for misogynistic violence they show that stuff unfortunately), the I, monster one is pretty good and I also liked my dear Henry. It’s Jekyll and Hyde reimagined basically but they’re black queer teenagers and while it’s not like it’s that faithful to the book it was a pleasant read!!

Also it’s quite silly but my favorite portrayal of him is the one from Mary Shelley’s Frankenhole. He is so silly and entertaining and I love him. I do want though that it’s a 2010 adult swim series. Also Jackson and holt aka monster high relatives of the Jekyll are quite fun but I didn’t look into em that deep yet,,
