Budgeting Basics 2/5: How to Save Money on Groceries and Meal Planning for a Tight Budget
Eating healthy and delicious food doesn't have to break the bank. With a little bit of planning and creativity, you can enjoy tasty meals while sticking to a tight budget. Here are some practical tips and tricks to help you save money on groceries and meal planning.
Plan Your Meals in Advance Meal planning is one of the most effective ways to save money on groceries. By planning your meals in advance, you can avoid impulsive purchases and only buy what you need. Start by making a list of the meals you want to prepare for the week, and then make a shopping list based on the ingredients you'll need.
Shop Smart When shopping for groceries, it's important to be a smart shopper. Look for deals and discounts on items that you regularly use, and buy in bulk when possible. You can also save money by buying generic brands instead of name-brand products. Another tip is to shop for groceries on a full stomach, as you'll be less likely to make impulsive purchases.
Use Coupons and Cashback Apps Coupons and cashback apps are a great way to save money on groceries. Look for coupons in your local newspaper, and use cashback apps like Ibotta and Rakuten to earn cashback on your purchases. You can also sign up for loyalty programs at your favorite grocery stores to earn discounts and rewards.
Cook at Home Eating out can be expensive, so try to cook at home as much as possible. Not only is it cheaper, but it's also healthier and allows you to control the ingredients in your meals. Consider batch cooking and meal prepping to save time and money during the week.
Use Leftovers Don't let leftovers go to waste! Instead, use them to make new meals. For example, you can use leftover roasted chicken to make chicken salad or use leftover vegetables in a stir-fry. Get creative and experiment with different flavor combinations.
Grow Your Own Food If you have a green thumb, consider growing your own fruits and vegetables. You don't need a large garden to grow your own food - you can use containers or even grow herbs on your windowsill. Not only will you save money on groceries, but you'll also have the satisfaction of growing your own food.
By following these practical tips and tricks, you can save money on groceries and meal planning while still enjoying delicious and healthy food. Remember to be a smart shopper, plan your meals in advance, and get creative with leftovers. Bon Appetit!
I don’t like ending the work week on a sour note, so here’s something more lighthearted. You know what I like best about Fridays? Yup, being able to dress down 😁 And how cute is this printed skulls tank top? I went a tad crazy when I saw it in Batam and bought it on the spot.
Things are flowing more smoothly at work now that I’m settling in. I’ve officially taken over a portfolio and been assigned additional duties. Sure, it’s pretty busy but time passes quickly (including yucky blue Mondays!) and I prefer that over twiddling my thumbs with nothing to do.
And you know what? The work week is officially over, it’s the weekend and we’re having salted fish and Chinese mushroom chicken patties to celebrate tonight! 😄
I loveloveLOVE the fit and colour of this bodycon dress, sadly no longer available at www.fayth.com BUT there’s something similar with sleeves, as well as pretty new designs available 😁 By the way, none of these #ootd posts are sponsored or ads; I’m just a hopeless shopaholic and bodycon/bandage dress addict 😅
It was a very busy day in the office so we were quiet like church mice which, unfortunately, made my sneezes sound all the louder 😕 I could’ve been a nose-honking orchestra on my own this afternoon! 😅 I try not to take any medication as far as possible, so tonight will be a very early night. I can’t wait to collapse into bed!
I’m just glad that the work part of the day is over. Tomorrow is Happy Hump Day. Another day for another bodycon dress 😁
Like all daughters, I enjoy girly chats with mummy and 1 of the things we talk most about is fashion. At 68yo, she still dresses up every week to meet friends over cozy lunches. Her style has evolved over the years, including after retirement, but it’s still fun to discuss outfits and trends. What we have in common is our love for bargain-hunting. Whenever possible, we try not to pay retail price for anything, including the designer bags and shoes that we love 😛
It’s possible to build a wardrobe at wallet-friendly prices. What we usually do is scour the sale sections, then chuck the clothes in the storeroom, sometimes for up to a few years (partly because we forget about them while scooping up several other deals). After everyone has worn theirs to death and discarded the items, we suddenly remember a purchase, dig them out from the storeroom and wear them.
Guess what? People ask where we bought our clothes from because by that time, they’ve forgotten these were dumped in the bargain bin a long time ago 🤣 Not only do we pay a fraction of the price, there’s little risk of bumping into someone wearing the same dress on the street 😄 It helps that we choose classic items in colours and textures that don’t go out of style, but once in awhile, I can’t resist an eye-catching number, like this past season candy pink peplum sweetheart from www.theoryofseven.com 😁
Are you a bargain hunter? How do you maximise your hardearned dollars?
