I'm actually so mad that I've heard so much about the killing joke and it gets so much praise they even based a movie off of it. only to read it and it's not good! this isn't one of the good ones folks! there are parts I personally enjoy (gordon being naked and chained like a dog and tortured) but otherwise this is such a nothing comic! like the jokers backstory is his wife suddenly dies and he's framed for a mob job that doesn't even work (like it immediately falls apart) he falls into chemicals and then INSTANTLY becomes The Joker. and then he and batman share a laugh the end. this is really one of the best batman comics?? really??? moore couldn't even bother editing out britishisms like making batman say "bloody" as a curse like you don't actually get to say you're a good author when you're that sloppy too! and of course Barbara getting introduced and then INSTANTLY shot and assaulted and only exists to hurt Gordon. cool.
anyway. everyone forget the killing joke now. don't recommend it for newbies. if this were someone's fic on ao3 that would be awesome but this did NOT warrant publishing or the decades of praise since. what a disappointment
it's actually driving me nuts how underutilized Dukes powers are, I need to read Batman and the Outsiders to see more but like this guy is so crazy powerful and they don't write about it and it's conclusions and consequences!! he can SEE FORWARDS/BACKWARDS IN TIME!! HE CAN SEE SLOW MOTION!! INVISIBILITY! BLENDING INTO SHADOWS AND MAKING LIGHT! SHADOW TELEPORTATION???? my guy if you can fuck with photons you can fuck with the world. the imaginations of these comics writers are so pea brained they just want to keep him in a tiny little box totally unproblematic totally not one of the most powerful guys ever let alone in Gotham, just hey Duke is Also here. anyway
i just finished reading batman and the signal and i thought it was fine. it was just okay. i wish i liked it more but it wasn't exciting or hard-hitting or really dealt with duke's issues just vaguely """"finding himself"""" but it's similar problems i have with tim drake mystery at the marina where it's fine. i wish i liked it more, but again, lacking excitement, stakes, hard-hitting emotions, just vague "finding himself". like duke doesn't really struggle? it's just normal fights and fucking around but no major mistakes or danger for him to overcome just. a day at work lol i would find the lack of emotional stakes more acceptable if it was more fluffy bc that would make sense and be more enjoyable to me as opposed to just. things are happening. and then also the vague. “im secretly your dad i stalked your whole life” that doesn't really get addressed? okay.... i understand duke being like “thats crazy. anyway” about the dad thing that makes sense. but like the story writing itself doesn't take that idea with any weight or seriousness which makes it totally fall flat
that being said, does anyone have an recommendations for comics that explain more about Duke's abilities? it's crazy how underused they are like he doesn't even use them until over halfway through this book. so far i gather he can see forward and backwards a few minutes in time, can turn invisible? idk if that's just his suit or if he can do that on his own
back on tumblr, ppl are worried about the future of paramore, i can't stop thinking about a ginger gal/dark haired guy ship and trying 2 fight the depression. it's like it's the early 10's again :c
