Hammersmith: It's for You! (1976)

After covering April Wine a few days ago right here on VinylSpinning and Geddy Lee's amazing autobiography before that on my RockingReads Tumblr, I'll make it three Canadian music blogs in a row with this second and final outing by the star-crossed Hammersmith.

Hammer-who-smith, you ask?

Proof that talented, driven musicians often get more than one swing at the plate, some of these guys got their start in the mid '60s with The Shades of Blond, ended the decade as The 49th Parallel, started the next one as Painter, and then morphed into Hammersmith by 1975.

Specifically, I'm talking about singer Doran Beattie, lead guitarist Dan Lowe, and bassist Royden Morice, who brought on second guitarist Jeff Boyne and drummer James Llewellyn for their self-titled debut, then replaced them with Craig Blair and Dale Buchner prior to this sophomore LP.

Recorded and co-produced 50 years ago by Jim Gaines (who'd worked on Painter's sole LP) at Sundown Recorders, in Edmonton, It's for You! clearly strains under the pressure to deliver both hits and hard rock; at best finding a tenuous truce in the glibly-worded power pop of "Be a Star," "Good-Bye, Good-Bye," "Breakaway," and "Kickin' Back."

I presume (hope, really) that first single "Dancin' Fools" was written ironically, but you never know in what was the golden age of disco, and there's a bewildering novelty song quality to "Under the Sea," and plain misfired gravitas about the awful, piano-led "Mr. Las Vegas."

Only twice do Hammersmith's results match their intentions and undeniable skills, and that's on the hard/soft contrasts of folksy acoustics, strings, and power chord bombast of "When I Was Young" and on the quaint but effectively hard-riffing "Hello, it's for You."

Actually three times, if you count Lowe's atmospheric instrumental guitar showcase "Barre's Bizarre," but when that qualifies as a highlight, you know there are serious problems with the remaining material.

And it was all for naught, at the end of the day, because "Dancin' Fools" failed to crack the Top 40, Mercury Records saw no reason to throw good money after bad, and dropped the band after Beattie quit following a short stint opening for Kiss.

Hammersmith briefly auditioned replacement singers, including future Moxy and Loverboy frontman Mike Reno (at the time, still going by his real name, Mike Rynoski), but decided to call it a day by the end of 1977.

Beattie later worked as a country artist and Lowe tried again with new bands 451 Degrees and Prototype, before turning to production and making a fortune for his role in developing a 3-D stereo enhancing algorithm called QSound, used by countless artists and even for early cell phone technology!

Compared to that, Hammersmith feels like a footnote to a footnote.
