40s Glamour: The Royal Air Force (pictured) being the 'new' junior service of the British Military (1918) in the inter-war period were known as the 'Glamour Boys' because of their fighter pilot image in their smart blue-grey uniforms. When the above side-cap was introduced in 1936, along with the collar 'and'n' tie uniform for all-ranks, ordinary airmen looked like officers. So envy from the army in their old-fashioned choker-collars then the hideous and baggy battledress, led to R.A.F. airmen being called 'Brylcreem Boys' from these adverts. It then caught on with the navy and then the whole population. (FTP)
