Brubeck: Koto Song | The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Live in Belgium 1964
+
Song of the Day -
Today marks the 60th anniversary of this phenomenal concert: the Dave Brubeck Quartet in Liege, Belgium - October 10th, 1964.
This song, “Koto Song” had just been written and recorded by the quartet in the Spring of 1964, inspired by their trip to Japan. Brubeck became fascinated with the Japanese instrument called the koto, which is a convex-shaped zither which has thirteen strings - a kind of a dulcimer. He said he felt the koto, when put with a flute or with a vocal, really created a uniquely Japanese ethereal style music.
“Koto Song” was a tribute to how much he loved the music of the instrument. The song has a blues base but then starts to flow into a Japanese style melody.
The quartet would record this tune many different times, always tweaking it in various ways.
It’s very peaceful, elegant, and atmospheric…
Beautiful genius Brubeck…

Dave Brubeck – A Dave Brubeck Christmas (Telarc/Craft Recordings – CR00667, 1996/2023 🇺🇸) If you’re in search of Christmas music this season that shirks the usual commercial offerings, make sure to give Brubeck’s beautifully minimalist holiday album a spin. Originally released in 1996, the album has been reissued as a 2-disc 45 rpm version. Read my full review at the Tracking Angle website.

Martini Time™️ is best enjoyed as close to the time one arrives home as possible, and preferably with Dave Brubeck playing in the background.
