When you live in America and can’t watch the premiere of Season 14

January 5th, 2018 at 4am, I woke up to my phone ringing. My first thought was “Why is my husbands alarm going off? It’s Saturday.” My attention turned to my phone ringing on my bedside table. The call was from my brother. I felt irritated. Why would he be calling me at this time? I finally have a day off to sleep in and I am being woken up at 4am. But, being the codependent I am, I answered the phone. ( I would like to add that my siblings and I are each other's keeper’s. We had to be because of our childhood). I answered that phone and before my brother could speak, my stomach did a flip. I answered “Hello? What’s going on?” Brother responded “I am at the hospital with Brooke and I need you to come.” I tried to stay calm, still unsure of the situation. I asked “What’s happening?” He responded “ I just need you to come, I need you to come, I can’t say it” his voice was broken but I could not process what he his voice was trying to tell me. A female voice (her mother) came to the phone and said “ Bailey overdosed last night and we are at the hospital in (small town name). I asked “Was it fatal or is she ok.” Hoping this was a time when she was found and Narcan would have saved her life. Her mother answered “No, she passed away and your brother needs you to come”. She hung up. There was a moment of stillness when I set my phone down and it only lasted a half a second. At this point my husband was awake looking at me confused. I hope out of the bed threw on my shoes and a jacket, forgetting a bra and blurted out “Bailey overdosed and she died and my brother needs me”. We left the apartment and my husband offered to drive. But I decided I needed to drive. The hospital was about two hours away and I knew if I did not drive I would fall apart. On our way to the hospital, I had a million thoughts but the only thing that I could say was “Oh My God, This can’t be happening”. The drive felt like the longest and shortest drive of my life. We arrived to a small hospital in the middle of a small Louisiana town. I think the hospital staff knew who I was because they silently guided me to a small room. In this small room was Bailey’s mom, her brother’s wife and her aunt. I immediately hugged her mother and waited silently for a few moments to be lead to my brother. Her mother said “He is in the room with Bailey, he will not leave her, he needs you”. Next comes the hardest thing I have ever witness or experienced. That’s saying a lot because my life has been far from easy.
